My college buddy purchased an lmt lower in 2005. He never built it out and doesn't know what he is able to do with it.

I am used to AWB living in ct but I'm not sure if it works the same and if he is somehow exempt if his 2005 lower is grandfathered in or not.

He doesn't know if he has a copy of the 4473 since it's been 20 years.

He has another ar with one of those upper/lower buttons to swap mags but would really like to assemble this in a preban fashion if it's allowed.

Can anyone in the know advise me so I can help him with his possibilities.?

Calguns.net will have the answers he seeks. Basically anything that would be considered 'Pre-Ban' would have needed to be registered prior to his 2005 purchase anyway. He would need to build it based on current CA law/regulations.

He will have to build it fixed mag, like his other build, or featureless. He cannot avoid that even with a lower bought in ‘05. Also if it was DROS’d as a rifle it cannot be an AR pistol.

Aren't 4473s kept by the dealers?

Go featureless, all the mag lock options suck for anything but a bench rifle/range toy. Fixed stock, no flash hider, no pistol grip. Pre ban/freedom week mags ok to use with it.

One reason I never bought an AR-15 while I was in California for the same reason, I've never bought lite beer or low-nicotine cigarettes - get the real thing or do without.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. As a California guy I hate the fact that I have Mag locks on my AR's.

I had to do this to not be a Felon in California.

I was not going to register them as "Assault rifles"

If I had registered them I can not transfer or sell them in CA.

Stupid laws out here...

Will the Kali Key still work?

They also have versions on their website that come with BCGs so you don't have to mess up your own.

I have never seen this before. Don’t know if it’s legal or not.

I know that there were all sorts of workarounds coming out back then.

Kali key works because the firearm is no longer semi auto. That’s how they get around AR pistols, too, offer them as “bolt action.”

Troy Ind made a pump action AR that would work, also, because non-semi.

I’ve tried plenty of variations and find featureless the best when safety is setup up to accommodate your grip. Looks funky as hell, but standard mag release and over 10 round mags is the best of the stupid situation for me.
