A reminder to men here, once in awhile check if your wallet is on you. I just found one on the sidewalk uptown, called the P.D. to report it and to inform them that I left it at the only open place on that block, a carryout restaurant that I assume this person had just left. So either the owner will realize what happened and retrace his steps or report it to the P.D., either case it is covered, the restaurant workers and the P.D. will both be aware of what happened and where it ultimately ends up. I'm taking a lesson from this incident also tonight. I'm paring down the amount of plastic I carry. His wallet was pretty well stocked with credit cards, in the wrong hands that can get ugly real quick. I too am guilty, I have more in there than there should be. Maybe we should all assess how many we carry and only have the essentials with us. -------------------------------------—————— ————————--Ignorance is a powerful tool if applied at the right time, even, usually, surpassing knowledge(E.J.Potter, A.K.A. Good point. Once a year or so, it's good to take some pictures of all you carry in your wallet. If it's ever lost or stolen, You know what cards you lost and who to call.

Thanks for doing the right thing. I’ve found two wallets in my life, and both times when I approached the closest person to ask if they had dropped it, the answer was “no, but is there any cash in it?”

I opened it just enough to see a Michigan drivers license and a bunch of credit cards. The license was from about twelve miles away, if it had been in town I would have left the wallet like I did after calling the P.D. and drove to their house to see if maybe the owner was there and not realized that he had lost it. No idea if any cash was in it, never looked at that, only to see if there was any I.D. in it. Probably 25 years ago my kids and I were in another city when we found a roll of bills, a bit over a hundred dollars. No I.D., just the money. We could have just pocketed it but I took it to the P.D. in that town. Even though both were young, one was twelve and the other seven I wanted to impress on them the "right" thing to do. Funny thing, a few years back, my youngest remembered us doing that, that probably was twenty some years after the fact. -------------------------------------—————— ————————--Ignorance is a powerful tool if applied at the right time, even, usually, surpassing knowledge(E.J.Potter, A.K.A. Twice in the last few years I have found a wallet in the same general location: sidewalk or parking lot in a local strip mall. Both times I picked it up, took it with me, and contacted the owner via information in the wallet -- driver license, etc. Wallets were both returned to the owners. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

I found a wallet on a train seat once. It did have cash in it, because it was just a clear plastic pouch and I could see a $5 bill. I don't know how much total cash it had, because I didn't look, just turned it in to a conductor. For all I know, it may have been just $5, it could have had $500. And I think credit cards. Again, something I'll probably never know. Just a couple weeks ago I found a $20 bill lying on the floor inside a Target store. It was smack center of a busy intersection. I didn't think it could have been lying there very long, so I looked around for someone looking around, but no-one. I asked a cashier what I should do, and he wasn't sure there was anything that I could do, and suggested finders, keepers. So I did.

Found wallet in gym locker room. Thick with cash and cards. Returned it and owner give me a $25 Starbucks card. Good feeling from getting it back to its owner was more rewarding than the coffee.

Years ago I brought my kids to a local swimming hole. It’s a gorge, mountain water, beautiful spot. The kids were around 8 & 11. Getting ready to jump in, I noticed something out of place on the bottom. I dove in and found a wallet. Cash and uncashed checks equaled $120as I recall. No identification. I dropped it off to the police, then started calling people with the same last name as on the checks. Come to find out, a kid worked all summer, saving his money, and stopped for a swim on his way to cash the checks. When he picked up his wallet, he was a very relieved and happy young man. Awesome job, I personally would not have left it with the restaurant. Calling the police and turning it over to them, or personally returning it to the owner would have been my choice. That way you are taking out the weak link, anyone in the restaurant, who you do not know their scruples. That way I know for sure the owner got the wallet back. Just my $.02 ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

Actually did both. Left it there after calling the dispatch center and giving the name of the girl working there as the contact. My son and I went to a local hotel that had a tobacco shop in it to buy some pipe tobacco for my FIL. On the way in my son found a wallet. Lots of cash in it. We took it to the front desk and the clerk told us he would just keep the cash and toss the rest. So we looked at the man's drivers license and looked up the phone number. A lady answered and asked where we found the wallet. We told her and all hell broke loose on her end. Apparently he wasn't supposed to be there. Lots of cussing, hollering and threats. I calmed her down and told her that he could pick up the wallet at the front desk with the $250.00 in it. I let the clerk know how much cash was in it and the owner was expecting that amount. The owner of the wallet called the front desk and asked if the people who found his wallet were still there. He wanted to buy the finder a case of beer. I told him my son was underage and it was our pleasure to help him out. Truthfully, I did not want to be around the guy in case the wife or SO started shooting. My son and still laugh about it 15 years later.

Came out of the transfer station one day and up to a stop sign and found a check book in the middle of the road. Had to pass the court house on the way home so I left it with the officers on duty at the metal detector at the door. About 6 months ago while running errands in the AM, found wallet in front of local donut shop. Loaded with 100 dollar bills and about 6 credit cards. Went to the local PD since guy lived about 60 miles away. One thing I learned from this was to trim down what I carry in wallet. The wallet I found looked liked a miniature football. Now I carry drivers license,CCW, insurance health card and 1 credit card with whatever folding money. I also have the 1-800 number for credit card in my phone.

I found a wallet at the dump. The owner must have put it on his lap after showing ID to enter the facility. The wallet contained his driver's license and his pilot's license along with some credit cards but no cash. I looked him up in the phone book and let him know he could pick it up at my house. He came by, thanked me and left. I was glad to help. One year later, right before Christmas, he knocks on the door and hands me ten dollars.

I found a wallet a few years ago outside a mall. It had a dr's license and a credit cards and a small amount of cash in it. I looked up the ph. no. but it had been disconnected. I took it to the Hampton, Va PD to turn it in since he lived in Hampton. They kept me there for over and hour, treating me like a suspect who had stolen it. I told them being honest was not worth this 3rd degree and walked out leaving the wallet with them. Never again! Next time I'll stick it in the closest mailbox. This past June, my daughter and I left Reading PA for a vacation in upstate NY. We got to the gas station, and she had an "oh $hit" moment when she realized she left her purse on the roof of the car when we were packing. We retraced our route, both in vehicles and on foot, and found nothing. It turned out that a cab driver saw us drive off, picked up her purse, and tried to catch us. We weren't driving particularly fast, but he couldn't catch us. Well, we returned to her house and sat it out for a while. The cab driver showed up later with the purse. He even attempted a delivery earlier while we were out searching, and didn't trust her next door neighbor to leave it with (they are kind of shady), and he came back. Dad was exceptionally grateful, and had his belief in mankind renewed at least a little bit that day. Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet. - Dave Barry "Never go through life saying 'I should have'..." - quote from the 9/11 Boatlift Story (thanks, sdy for posting it)
