3" of snow here today and now it's 29 and raining. They are forecasting up to 1/2" of ice. I worked from home this afternoon and kept the fire going; house is a comfortable 72. Tomorrow morning should be interesting. I've got the generator ready to go if needed.

County sheriff posted that roads outside of town were 100% ice covered and to stay home. I don’t think I’d want to put busses out on this stuff tomorrow and the warning doesn’t end until noon.

I live in Davenport, south of JDHunz, and all we've gotten is rain. The line appears to be Hwy 30, which runs E-W north of me thru Clinton.

Around me roads were not iced up at 5:30, but there was ice on tree branches and a few very small ones have fallen in our yard.

I grew up near Syracuse NY (close to Bald1), so I've experienced nasty winters.

I lost power about 2 hours ago. I’m just sitting here in the dark listening to ice covered branches snap and fall. It’s kind of eerie. The dog is freaked out.

I don't miss those northeastern ice storms. I remember once having to use a hatchet to chip my way into my truck one morning (it was a '77 Ford painted with primer and rust...no worries). Key? Pfft. That was the least of the problems. The doors were frozen shut with about 1/2" of ice, and the tires were frozen to the ground. That was fun.

We've lucked-out, so far. We got less ice accumulation than anywhere around: A mere 0.15 in. Most around us got closer to 1/4 to 1/3 an inch, on up to a half-inch or better.

The lights flickered a few times. Went out for a second or two once or twice. So far that's been it. We have large-ish areas nearby that are out.

Next door neighbor to one side did have one somewhat large-ish limb crash from his gigantic Box Elder. As luck would have it, that occurred right after one of the more substantial power glitches--causing the outside floods to go out, triggering the surveillance cameras, so I have the sounds of its crash recorded.

The temperature dropped, the ice is still there, and the wind is supposed to pick up later today, so we're not out of the woods yet.

Branches have been snapping off trees and crashing down for the last couple of hours. Several have hit my roof. I suspect we’re going to have some roof damage.

As I was looking out the window I saw a tree limb - probably 4” in diameter - snap and crash down between my house and my neighbor’s. If that had hit my roof, I’d be clearing it out of my living room. Eek

A few minutes after I posted this, another branch came down and took out my powerline. I'm the only house in my neighborhood to lose power. I reported it right away but I know ComEd won't get to me until they restore power to other areas.

Last night was fine: I closed the doors to the living room and got a fire going. But, when I woke up this morning, it was about 40 degrees in the house. The streets are filled with downed trees, branches, and debris. I was going to go to the library, but found out they lost power too.

So, I'm hanging out at my local coffee shop and will be keeping an eye out for the ComEd trucks.

Today begins the turnaround in our weather, the high today is forecasted to be 37°, falling tonight to just 0°. Last night, however, was a real bear. I can’t seem to find the official overnight low temperature, but it was forecasted to be -27°. All I know is that from the very early morning hours, the furnace ran almost continuously. I felt like the furnace was taking more than its share of oxygen (then you begin to hear the clicking on and off of solenoids). Quite a temperature change though, huh, from -27° to +37° from night to the next day. If my math is correct, that would be a temperature swing of 64°!

No ice here in the Yoop. But up on the hill in Negaunee, the NWS reported a one-day record snowfall of 20 inches. In MQT, I got about 12-14 inches or so. Very cold now and the sun is trying to peek through.

16/6 here today. 40s next week.

While I do like my seasons, and I do enjoy some nice subzero weather with a shit ton of snow from time to time, I'm officially done with winter. I'm tired of it. Not unlike when the end of August rolls around I'm sick and tired of summer. Plus, my woodpile is getting low.

It's time for spring.

We lucked-out. All around us they got 0.25 to 0.6 in. of ice. We received merely 0.15 in.

Yesterday afternoon it warmed-up just enough, for just long enough that, with the aid of a bit of ice melt stuff I was able to clear the driveway, walkway to the front porch, and front porch of ice. Got the vehicles de-iced, too.

Luckily, the trees and aerial wires and cables lost most or all of their ice, which was a good thing, because then there was wind.

Snow came down as low as elevation 3000', which includes Congress. The mountains we can see from here (our place is elevation 2500'), are the Date Creek and Bradshaw ranges, which includes Yarnell, and are all covered with snow. In the 20 years we have lived here, we have had two "snowfalls", amounting to about 1/4" each. Smile

We did catch the southern tail of that front, mostly two days of very high winds and some rain.
