Entered Wyoming from the north yesterday evening. At 1730 yesterday, we were still at 37° here in the Cheyenne vicinity. At that time, as I’m sure PCWyoming will attest, it was -6° in Cody. Today at 1100, it’s 1° here.

There’s a meme we see around here using the photo of John Candy. It says “Sorry folks, Wyoming is closed; Moose out front should have told you that.” It is, and much of the interstate system actually has been for a couple of days. I-80 from Cheyenne to the Utah state line is closed. I-25 from Cheyenne all the way up to I-90 is closed. There have been semis marooned around Cheyenne and they’ll probably be here for a couple more days. I saw a plea from truckers asking food trucks to work their way out to the truck stops, they’re tired of Wendy’s and Subway sandwiches.

This is a huge storm system and I’m aware the Wyoming is far from the only state impacted. The Great Lakes States in particular were apparently especially hammered. How are ya’ll doing?

Waiting for the Colorado low to get here this evening, cleared 6+ inches yesterday, expecting another 9-12+ tonight. What can I say, it's Minnesota.

I knew the SE United States was warm and dry, but I’m beginning to think this system isn’t as big as I imagined.

We’re in an ice storm warning, so all the schools around us canceled last night. The system is moving at a snail’s pace right now and seems to be coating everything. Some areas expect a half an inch with 50mph winds to follow.

It’s going to be ugly…

Yes, TMats, at 11:30 am Mountain Time was -4 degrees in Cody.

Have shoveled snow that has drifted 3 times in the past 13 hours.
Local roads are fairly clear for now.
We will survive this one.
Keeps the bugs down, and tourists away.

The warnings were 20" of snow and below zero.

We got a skiff of snow last night and it's around 15F. A little windy though.

Should warm up in a few days.

TMats, I'll be crossing Wyoming on I-80 on Saturday. Do you think it will be open by then?

Well the storm system will have moved on by then. I think you’ll be able to drive 80 by then, but the wildcard is always wind and blowing and drifting snow causing what WYDOT calls “rolling closures.” Over the next couple of days keep an eye on road conditions for both I-80 across Wyoming and I-70 through Colorado; sometimes it is better to drive through the Colorado mountains than across Wyoming. Thus far this is the 2nd snowiest winter on record in Wyoming. Be careful and keep your gas tank topped off.

That same storm system, as it heads east, is being fed by a bunch of warm, moist air from the south, giving us this:

Right now everything around here has a nice coating of sleet/ice on it. We're hoping it stays mostly sleet and snow around here. Not as likely to result in power outages as freezing rain. Looks like it's been mostly sleet, so far.
