Only help I can give you on your quest for a one cup coffee grinder:

You want a conical burr grinder for consistency. I've had the cheap ass blade grinders and it was quickly relegated to blending spices for BBQ rubs (i.e. couldn't produce acceptable consistency of grind size for my coffee).

Do not get the Oxo conical burr grinder as it's easily among the worst $100 purchases of my life. I really like Oxo brand so I was surprised at how poor this was. Fortunately, I quickly realized what a poor performer it was and returned it within the 30 day return window.

Both mine and Dad's Baratza Virtuoso conical burr grinders produce excellent, consistent grinds. You do have to tear them down pretty far every year or so as grinds build up in little crevices deep within the machine.

I know nothing about hand grinders, but note that Roastmasters website (i.e. where I bought both Technivorms and both Baratza Virtuoso conical burr grinders) in my experience only sells quality stuff. They sell a Hario Ceramic Mini Plus Coffee Mill that only holds enough for two cups of coffee and looks like it has a line for one cup of coffee. I probably wouldn't need caffeine by the time I got done hand grinding coffee.

Oxo makes a fantastic burr grinder for about 100.
Cuisanart makes an ok one, not as consistent grind, and noises for about 40 ish

Wow, we really had different experiences with the Oxo conical burr grinder.

Just saw tatortodd s review of Oxo. I trust his reviews…. I however have had really good experience with the Oxo.
If they are inconsistent, and we experience different results, then I would look elsewhere.

The moccamaster one cup is $170. The grinder is $244? Anything worth buying in the $50 ballpark, maybe up to $100? If not, I may have to just settle for pre-ground coffee. And not sure that's a good route (is pre-ground coffee the right size for the moccamaster?).

Try the cuisinart burr grinder….

Best option at that price range.

I like med coarse ish for my Moccamaster

It has a plastic cup the grinds fall into, it would build up static.
Take a clean dryer fabric softener sheet, and wipe around outside of container. Stopped the static that causes grinds to stick to sides.

Also, I have the kbt 10 cup, I daily make “4” cups which fills a 16 oz thermos.

I would recommend you spend a bit more and buy the 10 cup, but make less.

Not much more money, much more value in my opinion.

Okay - I'm considering instead the KBTS; I'm avoiding the models w/ hot plate since there doesn't seem to be a way to turn it off while brewing.

I want to be able to use a mug instead of carafe. I don't want to have to clean the carafe each time I brew a single cuppa.

Put 1 or 2 drops of water on the beans and agitate before grinding. You will never have a static issue and you can keep the dryer sheets away from the coffee equipment.

It works like a charm. I do this every day.

I have a Hario burr grinder you have to hand crank. It was under 50 and very consistent. Ive taken to using my oxo pour over $16 device though I also like the aeropress. Not popping on the higher end stuff but I know there's some tightwads like me reading the thread.

This is probably heresy, but after finished with the coffee, I double rinse the pot, triple rinse the filter basket, put a fresh filter in it, wet the filter, and put it all back together. If it hasn't hit the ~90 minute shut off, I turn it off, and top the water off. Then the next morning it is as simple as grind the beans, toss them in, and turn the switch on. I might wash the pot and/or the filter basket every few months.

Whenever a new girl at the local roaster where I get the beans offers to grind them for me, I thank her but say that I finally wised up and bought a grinder. About 20 minutes after grinding is probably too long to wait before brewing.

I’m not a hot coffee drinker at all so bear with me. I do enjoy an iced coffee in the mocha flavor range so when I saw Moccamaster I clicked the link.

Do these coffee makers make something like that or do they all work on ground up coffee beans.

Generally would like to get a good grinder - buy once, cry once. But with my budget, there is no way I can justify spending $250 for the grinder along with $250 for the coffee machine (that already is stretching my budget for unproven value to me). I'm settling for a $50 grinder for now.

I'm rationalizing this purchase for a few reasons:
1. pods are about $1 each (a little less but rounding to make the assessment easy)
2. i think I can get about 60-70 cups from a bag of $20 coffee. I think break even between using the moccamaster vs the nespresso at 1-2 cups per day is about 1.25 years.
3. moccamaster will open up a variety of different coffees - no longer would be be limited to peets pods. and i don't really care for most of the nespresso pods.

So more variety, perhaps better coffee and with financial savings (long term). That's my rationalization and I'm sticking to it We'll see if the wife accepts it....

I’ve gone back and forth over getting a Moccamaster. Decided to pull the trigger on the 40oz thermal carafe version with manual drip stop so I can brew straight into my mug.

Been a fan of Keurig convenience, but tired of the pods or dealing with the reusable ones.

I have an Oxo burr grinder I have been happy with, seems to be very consistent with the grind

A $50 grinder may not be the best, but it will likely beat the stuffing out of having the beans ground when you buy them.

It's been a while since I've checked, but Baratza used to occasionally have refurbished grinders on their website at a significant discount.

Dumb question since I've never purchased a grinder before: in what ways will a $250 Baratza (virtuoso?)) be better than a $50 burr grinder (say OXO or Krups or Cuisinart?

Function? Durability? Ease of cleaning / maintenance? Other? Is it worth the additional $200? It just seems so simple - adjustable one button tool. Other than build quality and durability, how can different models be so different in function and cost?

I have no baseline today - the $50 one when I receive it will be my first baseline to compare against.

They have a Cuisinart burr grinder at my local Costco for $50.

I was tempted, but my Oxo hasn’t given me any reason to stray
