I tell people on a regular basis, “Step up or step out.”

I had to let someone go today. They have been warned about their attendance and signed documents acknowledging it. While it sucks, they fired themselves in this case, as is every case. I can only do so much to help you, but you need to help yourself too.

A year ago I went from basically solo to herding 15 cats, 18 if we could get a full team together. I realized today that I've fully turned over 1 of 3 groups & I'm fine with that. My newest 'bearded lady' (as my AM coined them) may not make it, but otherwise I've got a better team than I started with.
Only 1 of the 4 flamed out and he was a head case anyway. 1 had to have his buddy call us since he only had 1 phone call available.....

I set an example & if you don't meet my expectations, you'll know it plainly. (somewhat) Nicely the 1st time.

Early on in my management years (assistant manager) we had to let a parts delivery driver go. This one was really bull, the kid was supposed to have annoyed the facility manager at the company Christmas Party. A whole big nothing, apparently he (fairly new hire) spoke to the manager and thanked him for the job, how he appreciated it being his first job, etc. Kid had low self esteem issues but he was really doing well, on time every day, followed instructions.

So first work day after the party which happened to be Christmas Eve we were told to terminate him that day. No reprieve. Kid didn’t deserve that, nothing my manager or I could do.

Still bothers me today and that was well over 45 years ago.

It may not be the same for everyone, but I can definitely say every job I've ever been fired from has led to a much better situation. Sometimes there was a little pain in the interim and there was always a lot of stress. But every single time it led to a much better situation and I am truly thankful I got fired from each place.

BTW, I went to see Larry David last Friday and he talked about some of his firings. That man really landed on his feet after each one.

Retired now but during my career in management I was taught early on from a senior person. He told me to terminate people on a Monday if possible. Friday termination left the person unable to do much about the situation over the weekend other than to brood. On a Monday, he could be on the phone/street the next day looking.

There's the key. It stinks to have to fire anyone, but if you do your job during reviews, as you have indicated above, you don't fire them. If you are reviewing the things they need to work on/correct, and they don't correct them after multiple opportunities, they fire themselves.

I've got an odd situation in this thread.

A while back I pushed a little to get my organization to bring in a fellow from my previous place of employment.

At the previous, I really liked him. Anything I asked him to do, he was all over it. I could ask, walk away, and come back a half-hour later and find it done. So we brought him in.

We had some troubles shortly afterward. Attendance issues, mostly. He got a few "talking-to" sessions, and kinda-sorta had things in order. Really walking the tightrope, though.

A few weeks ago, his wife left him.

Curiously enough, y'all, his attitude has been awesome! He's been showing up on time, he's got a smile on, and he's doing good work. Now, his situation outside of work really sucks, but time we get with him has greatly improved!

And then yesterday he said he needed a minute with me. He explained that he's been offered another job, and is leaving tomorrow afternoon.

I can't fault him, man. It's a great opportunity, and something he put in for (unknown to us) several months ago. It'll be good for him and his daughter. I wish him well.

Five people on the crew, and he's certainly not the one I (or the rest of them) would prefer to see leaving. Wink

God bless America.

Welp, it happened to me today. I’m a bit stunned as I never saw it coming.

The boss called me with HR on the line and told me that I was being terminated, effective immediately. Haven’t been with the company a year. No explanation on why I was being let go.

After ruminating thru the morning, I finally looked at the separation information they emailed me. Turns out I’m part of a reduction in the workforce. 7 other people got the call today as well.

Guess my number was pulled as I was the highest paid in my department and there appears to be a slowdown coming.

This last company does renewable/energy savings projects and they must be seeing the writing on the wall regarding government handouts….

I’m on the cusp of retiring but a couple more years to build up the savings some more would be nice. Good thing is my wife isn’t ready to retire yet so the mortgage and health insurance is covered for a while
