So daughter is currently in flight school working towards her commercial pilot rating. Ultimate goal is to fly for the regionals and then the majors. She’s expressed the desire to be an armed federal flight deck officer.

They also have a law enforcement program on her campus and she went shooting with them. When I asked how it was her response was, “Your guns are nicer.” Unfortunately I don’t think they’ll let her carry a Dan Wesson 1911 in 9mm which is what she learned to shoot centerfire pistols with.

She’s got a birthday coming up and there is the tradition of weaponry for Christmas and birthdays; Daisy Red Ryder, Mathew’s Chill X compound bow, Ruger 1022 and a Ruger Mk IV. So I was thinking of getting her a sidearm that she can carry in her future job. The only information that I can find is that originally HK USP’s in .40 with the LEM trigger were issued now transitioning to Glock 19 Gen 5’s. There’s a caveat that states they are able to use personally owned similar equipmwnt.

My question is just how similar does similar have to be? Is it limited to the Glock 19 or can it be any compact striker fired pistol?

According to google.

Federal Flight Deck Officer Program

initially, the Heckler & Koch USP Compact .40-caliber pistol was the standard issue, but as of 2020, the DHS has transitioned to the 9mm Glock 19 model.

FFDOs can choose to purchase their own firearms of a similar type

There are just two posts above yours. Did you read either of them especially maybe the first one? Confused

@2000Z-71, I’m sorry I have no useful information, but from reading about your daughter over the years, I want to say job well done to you. I wish her well and would be happy to have her piloting any plane I was on.

One of my student’s family member is a current armed flight officer. I’ll check with him and get back to you.

What I learned from working for federal and local governments is that When there is a policy listing a certain gun it lists the make and model. And there is no deviation.

You could hand her a iou at the bday, and then pay for whatever she’s allowed to use when she completes the training and is allowed to carry.

My choice would be the Glock 26. Easier overall carry. If the 19 is not required.

My ffdo buddy has been doing it 20 years. He said glock 19 with a 15rd mag and the only customized part is the backstrap for hand size.

Are federal LEOs permitted to carry privately owned firearms on duty? (This wouldn't preclude your giving the gift.)

Yeah, I was going to suggest he change his signature at the bottom but I guess it still kinda fits. Wink

She’s 19 now turning 20 this spring. already has her private pilot’s license, her instrument rating and will have her commercial rating at the end of this semester. She has the ambitious goal of having her bachelor’s done next year when she turns 21.

One of the funny things is her school flies the Piper Archer, she’s earned the nickname The Archer in the Archer.
