I kind of figured it was something like that.

That's why you use 2 independent firing lines for something like this. If the first fails, fire the second. I wonder if they had a single firing system, too.

Warm up the Thunderbolts from ANG 127th Wing over at Selfridge.

They could probably donate a little ordnance.

Yes the local news said that 1/2 the charges didn't detonate due to a wiring issue. Now you have an unstable structure and unexploded ordinance

Which is why you don't daisy chain the critical charges.

If it positively has to fail because of explosives, each charge has a primary and secondary detonator, all on individual lines of det cord. Yes it's more expensive and labor intensive but you don't get hung up structures.

Ordnance.

Not Ordinance.

I see that mistake in DoD documents I review and it always grinds my grist.

I'm blaming autocorrect on that one.

Evidently not...

You see, this is what happens when you bring the experts in, instead of letting men who are still 12 year old boys at heart do the job. I'm willing to bet that a bunch of Sigforumites with an unlimited energetics budget could have brought that place down (up?) no problem. We might have gotten half of Pontiac along with it, but the Silverdome would be gone baby, gone.

Meanwhile, on the ISS, one guy looks at another and says, "Hey! Did you hear that?"

Free beer while the building stands or strippers, once, if the building falls on the first try? I'm thinking it's going to take a while to knock it over. Very complicated doncha know? Years of careful planning.

Apparently twice is the charm, more charges and a lot of checks and the ring is off the building.

Thus proving the old saying "most of life's little problems can solved by the subtle application of high explosives"

I don’t think their intention was to blow up the whole building. They were just trying to get the high stuff down low enough to reach it with their equipment.

The intent of the explosive demo was to bring down the steel ring that supported the dome. The rest of the structure will be taken down by excavator and normal methods. The ring apparently presented a risk to normal demolition and had to come down in one piece.

Watched a lot of Supercross races in there. Back in the late 70's and early 80's they would have huge attendance Saturday evening and again on Sunday afternoon.
