This is amazing, and it will help a lot of people who are retired on fixed income with the cost of their homes. Since Covid many of the city/county tax revenues have tripled, but the total population hasn't, so the cost of service operations wasn't increased by influx of people from the north. Should open up properties being available to sell, and improve the ability to afford homes in Florida. https://x.com/EricLDaugh/status/2061619159130075254

Great job, Florida. Now, if only Texas follows suit. Q

This is one of many reasons I am glad he's not president. He's doing great work for Florida right now that any other person might not be able to do. I hope it starts a trend but I already know the answer. Let all Men know thee, but no man know thee thoroughly: Men freely ford that see the shallows. Benjamin Franklin

I agree, and property taxes are also a huge issue in other states as well (NJ, NH, Conn, NY, etc). It would be interesting how DeSantis plans to deal with billions in taxes cut from the FL budget if it passes- raising sales taxes, state fees, etc. Or just cutting spending. Nice! Hopefully they are also cutting spending as well. Reason I say that is that over the long term, states have to cover expenses, and the money has to come from somewhere. It's not the Feds - who can just have the Federal Reserve/Treasury conjure dollars as needed. If states don't reduce spending to match the cuts, eventually some other tax has to go up to replace the cut.

Corect me if I am wrong, but if this passes it only puts it on the ballot in November to be voted on? The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. This is one of the lefts fake arguments, from 2019 to current the tax revenues in every county has doubled or tripled in Florida. Broward county went from $1.08 billion to $1.8 billion with a 5.3% increase in population/homes. $800 MILLION in increased revenue. It's the same in every county in Florida, politicians and city/county governments have been raking in massive increased tax revenue from property taxes without corresponding demand for increased services. A local city nearby was planning on building a multi million dollar new police station, it is a Taj Mahal of buildings, that's how much excess money they have. Even with the projected reduction in tax revenue every county in Florida will still take in more money than they did before COVID by a significant amount of money.

I'm sure they will appreciate the almost 50% reduction. Still gotta pay for the schools, though. I guess they'll just call it something else. School tax, maybe. Instead of a property tax. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Vgex,

The fact that he can do this (hopefully) in a State with no income tax is great. I am sure the sales tax revenue is very significant with all the tourists and exiles from other States. In NH, 70%+ of property tax revenues go directly to the bloated, overstaffed school systems.

Fat chance here in Illinois. No way Pritzker lets that gravy train go.

We pay for schools, heavily in our tax rates, but the overwhelming evidence shows that the counties and cities have taken in double digit and some times triple the tax revenue over the past 6 years since covid. Seminole County has taken in a 70% increase in property tax revenue in that time with just a 5% increase in population. Seminole county in 6 years has gone from collecting $178 million a year to over $300 million, from nothing more than increased property values. There is no massive increase in roads, schools, fire, police, nothing. There's no shortage of money, schools, funding dollars, the governments are getting fat off increased tax revenue from home sales to out of state buyers pushing up the values once the home sells. It's killing off sales of property as owners don't want to pay double or triple the tax rate once they convert equity from one home to another, even if that new home is worth half their old homes value. https://x.com/RonDeSantis/status/2061782451668615438

This is true and the loss of property tax income will have to be replaced with new taxes or raising other taxes but at least the state won't have the power to tax you out of your home. I think retirees and seniors citizens over 65 should be exempt from paying property taxes since they've paid taxes their whole lives and many are living on fixed incomes.

Would this elimination for owner occupied property tax be for all homes? For $150,000 to $10,000,000+? No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

This ignores the massive inflation for the last 6 years. The local governments are just going to hit us with special assessments, fire fees, etc. there is a lot of hiding the numbers and politcal theater regarding this issue. It will be interesting to see the money spent on both sides between now and the election and what the economists say. While i’d love to have my property taxes cut, doing it without a financial impact study is irresponsible.
