Way too long to cut and paste.

Consumers, rejoice: An attack plan is nearing deployment against the billions of illegal robocalls that have made telephones and smartphones virtual weapons of mass frustration.

Emerging from a years-long effort by government, telecommunications and computer experts, the plan will use a verification system to stop robocall companies from masking the true numbers those billions of unwanted and illegal calls.

The tactic, known as spoofing, fools consumers by causing their Caller-ID systems to indicate falsely that the robocalls come from the phone numbers of familiar businesses, organizations, friends or acquaintances.

The verification system targets a problem that's a top priority for the Federal Communication Commission and the Federal Trade Commission.................

So...they're still going to call and bug the shit out of me 27 times a day, it just won't look like a local number.

Exactly how does this help the problem?

Now all we need is to add in some good old-fashioned drawing and quartering everyone associated with the practice pour encourager les autres.

No, it’s not perfect, but it’s a good first step.

Why not just enable the recipient of any unwanted calls to block any number that is even remotely associated with the marked calling number from ever calling you again without a severe penalty?

I have a simple method for dealing with all this asshattery:

1. Phone on silent
2. Never pick up unless it's the wife or someone you know
3. If it's important, they can leave a message

I have AT&T Call Protect set up on my iPhone and it seems to not be working anymore. Just yesterday alone: 27 spam calls.

WTF!

I constantly get "call backs" on my mobile. I have to explain that my number gets spoofed...

I now get more spam calls to my cell phone than my home phone. They've also now started redials. Some wait minutes but the latest trick seems to be three redials in under 1 minute. I assume that's to defeat one of the blocking features. I've silenced my call notifications but this is still aggravating. I shouldn't have to. Apple needs to give me the option of only passing through calls on my Contacts list.

I got three today. If it’s not in my contact list and I’m not expecting a call then it can go right to voicemail. I don’t answer it or try to unsubscribe. My voicemail message doesn’t even say my name. I had a computer voice say leave a message.

That’s easy. Set the setting for “Do not disturb” to let anyone in your contacts through but send everyone else straight to voicemail. Then leave your phone in “Do not disturb” mode all the time. The only downside is you won’t get notification of texts at all, whether they are in contacts or favorites.

By sheer happenstance, I watched a YouTube vid about the “RoboKiller” app today.

Sounds like fun. Basically uses answer-bots to spoof the robocallers, wasting their time.

Lots of options for the answer-bots

Virtually all of the spam calls I get aren't even live people.

To all the folks that say “phone on DND, only contacts get through”...they are spoofing numbers now. I have gotten “calls” from folks in my contact list. My tool buddy at work got a call from himself today.

I have started just messing with them.
My Jerry Lee Lewis impersonator burn victim story is always a hoot.
Lately, asking them to join the NRA or if they have a moment to talk about their Lord & Savior Jesus Christ has been the quickest way of getting a hangup.

Just part of the cat and mouse game. There will be another way around it soon.
Until they figure out a way to actually punish the people and companies behind them, they will barely put a dent in this practice.

This is a big enough scam business that somebody, somewhere must know who the people are who do it.
It seems like it would only take one investigative journalist to find at least one of the main sources. Then, this is why "vigilante justice" is a thing.
