Empty stomach. Maybe coffee. I thought about one of those ice jackets I see tour de France rider wear during warm up.

I trained before eating for years. That was my light workout. My heavier ones were mid morning and late evening. As long as you aren’t dealing with glycogen starvation - cottage cheese the night before will help - you should be OK. Maybe a light drink will help - I usually made one with a little pedialyte, fresh orange juice, raw honey, whey protein and water.

A lot of good information here. I appreciate all of the responses. I tried exercising early before breakfast this morning. First time I tried it. My first impression doing this was positive. Getting out early does beat the heat. So for now I'll stick with it. I worked 6 days a week for years before I retired. I did eat healthy while I was working. But to be honest, any exercising was sporadic. And that's being charitable. I made a vow to myself that I would exercise 5 days a week minimum when I retired. And I have kept the vow. I'm not interested in a gym membership because of the distance to a gym. Knowing myself like I do, if I exercise at home I have no excuses. And I haven't missed any weeks of exercising at least 5 days (except one week when I was away visiting my son). All of the men on my father's side were dead before they were 70 for at least 5 generations back. I've made it to 71 and I have no issues of any significance. I really do believe the diet up until I retired plus the diet and exercise after I retired is largely responsible. The genetics on both sides of my family (especially for the men) is not promising for a long life. But I do believe that you can overcome genetics to an extent. As the comedian Steven Wright says - I plan on living forever. So far, it's working.

There's a guy named Eric Daw on youtube. He's a personal trainer for Seniors. I've become a fan and have subscribed to his channel. I really like the way he does his videos to help improve and maintain what us Seniors need physically. Check him out. Go to youtube and in the search block type in Eric Daw, and look through the list of his videos, watch some that speak to you, so to speak. I really like his Flexibility exercises. . .

Every day when I wake up, I take my long-acting insulin (type 1 diabetic), eat breakfast, then go run a mile and a half. I work nights, so sometimes "morning" is 1 or 2pm. In the summer, it sucks. I just embrace the suck and get it done. It keeps the insulin doing it's thing and helps keep my blood sugar under control, so it's worth it, but it's not really a good time.

I never eat before running. This morning I'll be on the trail by 7:00 hopefully (52 degrees). Six miles, home, shower, to work, and I'll eat some oatmeal/applesauce mix (cold) at my desk by 9:00. ![]()

Alarm went off at 5:20am this morning. I was on the bike at 5:45am. Met the group at 6:00am. Back home at 7:20am with 28 miles under my belt. No breakfast, only water. I have been doing this for years. On the longer weekend rides I will have a carb / electrolyte solution in my bottle, but solid food is almost a never before I work out, whether it is cycling, weight training or yoga.

Mon-Fri I'm up at 4:45, at the gym 5:30-7:00, quick shower, then breakfast. I do crossfit and can't imagine working out in the heat of the day in an NC Summer ____________________ I Like Guns and stuff

I'm up early, have a cup of coffee and try to be out running no later than 6AM.

I liked what I saw. Good practical advice. Reviewed several videos. I'm a subscriber now. Perfect for a man or woman who is not a gym rat, but at the same time is willing to put some effort and time into staying healthy. Thanks OKCGene.
