I'm 71, retired, and don't have a gym membership. Don't want one. It's getting to that time of year when it gets nasty hot. I try to look after my health paying attention to healthy eating and exercise. Cardio 4 - 5 days a week (jogging and power walking) and some light resistance with exercise bands. Exercising in the evening is not an option.

So what I have been doing is getting up, eating breakfast, then waiting an hour and a half or so to let breakfast digest, then exercising. By then the temperature is starting to climb. So here is my question. Anybody exercise as soon as they get up (before breakfast)? If yes, how does that work out for you? How long do you wait before you eat breakfast? Might be a dumb question, but I would like some advice on this.

Best time of day to excercise for me, no matter the weather, is within 60” of awakening, after one cup of coffee. Whether it is swimming, jogging, walking, other. Makes the whole day good. 67 now, been doing that way since at least 50 yo. Later in the day never as good, unless I can be kayaking.

Do how the military does it, very early in the morning before it gets hot, then eat breakfast.

I started doing intermittent fasting and only eat between 10 AM and 8 PM. Therefore, I've begun doing all of my weekend chores (e.g. mowing, car washing, etc) before breakfast.

I really thought I'd get light headed from lack of food, but so far (likely hottest June in recorded history) that has not been the case. I do take my metamucil and have a Gatorade GZero before heading into the heat.

I'm 75 and it depends on what I'm doing that day. Up at 0600; jump on the rower for 30-60 minutes, ~15 minute cool down, and then eat breakfast. Next day up at 0600; down a bagel, meds, and 16 oz electrolyte then head for the pickleball courts for about 2-3 hours, lunch at 1130 after my shower.

That’s how we did it in boot camp.

We get some pretty hot weather here also.

I get up, have coffee and then take the dog for a walk, maybe 2 or 3 miles.

Then I eat brunch and do whatever needs doing, maybe read a bit.

At 3:00PM, I do 3/8 mile of laps in the pool, then it's Miller time.

That's my exercise.

That’s what I do as well. I get up about 4:30 during the week, walk anywhere from 3.5-5 miles and then shower, breakfast, and off to work. Seems to be working out ok. I’m more of a morning person, at least for the last 10-15 years so I’m sure that has something to do with it.

That said I do love the feeling of working out late in the evening and crashing into bed exhausted.

Curious why you don't want a gym membership. I get one at any of the top gyms at no cost through my insurance. Cool inside, lots of gear, nothing not to like. Now if I was paying 50+ a month for a membership, I'd find other alternatives.

I always exercise on an empty stomach. The only exception will be if I'm riding over 30 miles or a lot of elevation. But for running or lifting I never eat first. One thing I do is that on lifting days I will have a protein drink right after I'm done.

I’ve logged over 30,000 miles running over the past 23 years, 95% of which has been before breakfast, drinking only water. On runs greater than 8 miles, I’ll use Power Bars or Clif Blocks.

I wouldn’t fuck with that heat under any circumstances. I lift 5 days a week, eat super healthy, and last night after mowing at dusk, I damn near got heatstroke.

Do you have a recreation center in the area? If so go that route. Many of them have pools and it’s the safest exercise for your muscles and joints providing you know how to swim. Even if they don’t have a pool, they’ve got cardio machines and cold AC. You can walk, run, bike, stair step. They might have a track too you can walk and run on. Don’t fuck with the heat.

And even a gym, it’s relatively dead in the mornings. It’s busiest right after 5pm when people get off work.

What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

I personally cannot work out on a totally empty stomach. However, a cup of coffee, a banana, and a protein shake is enough to keep me going through my workout when I need to work out first thing in the morning.

But I really, really dislike working out in the morning. My preference is the evenings. I usually work out, shower, and go to bed.

Well there is that.
At my age -- 85 -- doc said that the best exercise for me is walking. My neighborhood is not great for that, very few sidewalks, so I would be mostly in the streets, taking my chances with distracted drivers.

My balance is not reliable, don't want to take a chance on another fall.

Best option for me is a treadmill. No traffic, and hand holds to help with balance. I "walked" a few miles each time at the gym.

Might have to see if we can make room for one someplace in the house, pick up a used one on CraigsList or the second hand sports equipment re-sale shop near here ("Play It Again").

I'm about to be 69 so we're close in age.
First, have you been keeping up with your medical checks and asked your doctor?
If everything is clear with him/her, then be sure to not get dehydrated but just use common sense and work up to whatever you feel comfortable with.
I my case, I have dogs and they walk me at least 5 miles a day. I don't do any gym type stuff, just a grip exerciser while driving to keep me busy and any yard work I need to do.
I do have an I-watch to get some idea of how much I do too.

I'm 79, and I'm still taking my chances at the gym. The one I go to is very large and things are spaced well so unless you're talking to someone you're pretty far apart. They clean things constantly, and I carry one of their disinfectant sprays bottles and spray equipment before I use it. So far so good. Home equipment is a good option if you've got the space for it.

OK. I'm 72, close to your age. I have a membership to Planet Fitness and my wife and I hit the gym at 0200. We'll grab an Atkins shake before we go and our workout lasts about 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 hours. The gym has A/C so it's not a problem..... We get up early anyway so the early time isn't such a bother.
