The thread on the Cuban missile crisis reminded me of this guy who just died recently. He probably saved our lives or at least the world as we know it today.

Hound DogI thought this was about the Soviet sub commander during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
I remember reading about the 1983 false alarm (I spent 13 years in the USAF missile warning community after the first Gulf War, so we discussed this incident).
RIP, Comrade.
Just goes to show there are good men and women on both sides of most conflicts. . .
