During the late 1970s, I spent a year and a half working on a consulting assignment in Barcelona. Lots of vacation time and long weekends, so we did quite a bit of touring in western Europe.

The kids were 10 and 12 at the time, and before crossing any border, we drilled them on "please" and "thank you" in the language of whatever country we would be entering.
