I have a guy who wants to pay me via Venmo.

I'm a little old fashioned and feel a little uneasy with this method of money transfer.

Do I have anything to worry about or just go for it and take the money via Venmo.

What is the forum take on Venmo?

Thanks...

I recall Clark Howard (radio consumer financial advocate) is dead set against it, but can't recall why. That being said, I used it (once) with no problem. Although I knew and trusted the person I was paying.

I use it on occasion. It seems a little more user friendly than PayPal. I would have no qualms with taking payment from someone solely because it’s via Venmo.

True, but the fact is it's a very convenient, safe, and effective method to transfer money between individuals.

I needed to sign up for it to pay a relative for some tools they got me at cost and I haven't seen any issues with it. Just another method to transfer money, I've used it twice now and will be doing an other transfer shortly. Zelle is another method common with large banks, you might ask if you could go that route. Just another option.

I use Zelle. Super easy and free.

Venmo is fine for payments between friends. It has similar issues around charge backs and other bank hold shenanigans as PayPal. Do you trust the guy who owes you money?

Be cautious. Venmo should only be used among people you know personally and trust.

First off, it was designed to be used among friends and family. A way to pay for a group dinner without splitting the check 8 ways... for roommates to pay shared bills easier... It WAS NOT designed to be used as a payment system between strangers.

There is not a good escalation system in the event of fraud or disputes between parties. I have seen it used as a scam as online payments for Ebay and other similar sites.

Lastly, it is owned by PayPal, who despises gun owners. Screw paypal.

My girlfriend and I use it to reimburse each other for groceries or some other joint purchases. That is all I would use it for.

I've used it occasionally. Always between people I know and trust. It's handy if you travel with friends. Makes splitting bills easy.

As has been said it's fine between people you know and trust. I wouldn't use it for consumer needs.

It’s free and works just fine. It’s what my coworkers and I use to pay each other for lunches and our portions of the monthly snack run to Costco.

Popular with Millenials. I just learned about it last week. I use Zelle through my bank. Both work fine with friends. Not for strangers IMHO.

Yup. Service is owned by the major banks. So, payments between parties are direct, and not going through any 3rd party PayPal or Venmo. And, the funds are instant and without fee. Nobody knows your account number, except your bank.

I've used Venmo (though I admit I was unaware of the PayPal connection) and CashApp. Both are solid. Google Pay wanted .y social, so I nope'd out on that one.

Dad uses Zelle to take rental payments for his tenants. He said he likes it because he gets email and text message confirmations in addition to the little popups the app puts on the phone.

I would be careful. Venmo has the worst customer service of any company I have ever used. I attempted to use it, and it rejects every single card I attempt to use. I contacted their customer service and this is the response I got:

"Thank you for reaching out to Venmo Support! My name is Andruw. I am terribly sorry that you are having problems adding your card to your account! I would be more than happy to help you.

It looks like your attempt to add this card is being declined by our system. This generally happens because a security flag has been raised.

This doesn't necessarily mean that you've done something wrong, as the declines are automated by our system. I'm very sorry about the inconvenience here, but at this time we are not able to override these declines. For security reasons, customer facing teams are not able to see the exact reason for the decline, but in some cases you may be able to try adding the card again later.

If this is a time sensitive payment, we recommend that you add a different payment method. If this is your only card, we understand you may need to use a different payment processor, such as our parent company, PayPal.

If you have any further questions or concerns please let me know! Have a wonderful day."

Their response tells me there is a problem, they can't see what it is or fix it, and to use one of their competitors instead. Looking online it appears there are a number of others with the same issue, and they get the same bullshit response where no one even attempts to look into their issue. If that is their response to a problem, they really aren't a company I want to do business with after all.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

I use it daily to pay my nanny. It's easy. Money comes right out of my checking. I see no issues. Just be smart about it.

Also, there is a setting to make your transactions private. If not enabled, other people can see who you are paying and from whom you are receiving.

A friend tried to use it earlier this year and as soon as he put funds in the account they locked it with no explanation. He started researching and found a reddit discussing a class action suit because of how frequently this happens. Took him 3 months to get his money back. Never got an explanation for what happened.
