They check the health of the herd with emphasis on pregnant and young animals. Also a numbers must be reduced annually to cap the herd at a number that the Park grasslands can sustain. This was sort of sad to watch! Compared to the roundups of a couple decades ago, this looked like something Buffalo Bill would set up for his wild west show. A friend of mine rode in a couple roundups back in the late 80's early ninety's and he was a narly, seasoned horseman. They wouldn't let anyone, who wasn't, work the roundups because it was dangerous and those buffalo were unpredictable and you had to know what you were doing. Gov.
