They check the health of the herd with emphasis on pregnant and young animals. Also a numbers must be reduced annually to cap the herd at a number that the Park grasslands can sustain. So there is a subsequent auction held to achieve this.

This was sort of sad to watch! Compared to the roundups of a couple decades ago, this looked like something Buffalo Bill would set up for his wild west show.
A friend of mine rode in a couple roundups back in the late 80's early ninety's and he was a narly, seasoned horseman. They wouldn't let anyone, who wasn't, work the roundups because it was dangerous and those buffalo were unpredictable and you had to know what you were doing.
Gov. Noem still looked good though!
