My old dept provided Uniform, Boots, Belt, Taser Body armor Gun Ammo Flashlight, small and large Mags Baton Oc spray Handcuffs, ...what every new officer needed was a "blue book"-shortcut to most often charges in NC along with verbiage And a set of hinge cuffs And a waist chain and leg shackles "Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor.” Robert A. The four departments I worked for issued us almost everything that MikeinNC listed in his post. We were even issued clipboards, and bullet proof vests. I was also issued spike strips and a less lethal shotgun. I think the only thing I had to buy was a small flashlight for my pocket and one for my belt but the Depts issued a large flashlight (Streamlight SL-20). Our small cheat books were for Virginia. I think that was more than enough, and I carried the bare minimums on my duty belt. Let me add that I did buy a better camera when I started more and more accident investigations.

hello darkness my old friend |
More traffic cones(we get 5 total). Spikes. More than one 20 round AR rifle mag should the shit actually hit the fan. A good printer/laptop that actually works in our cars. And if we are wishing large quantities of cat food to keep these guys out of the neighborhoods so i don't have to take any more poodle theft cases in the middle of the night. image post

I think my wants are for better, more up to date, realistic training. Some of thats gear but most of it is mindset. Gearwise, give me - a computer that wont crash in the middle of a report and has more processing power than my watch. You know, I'd like it to earn its ridiculous price tag. -an integrated system that lets me autopopulate data onto all related reports so I dont take an hour making an idiot face sheet for reports. I'd settle for a bodycam that I can use as my report and only have to plug in notes about things you dont see. -A patrol vehicle thats either an SUV or a car. I dont want something that looks like an SUV but cant hop a curb without spending a week in the shop afterwards. If its a car I want room to sit in it. -Short barreled rifle. I'd like to get out of my car without ripping half my equipment out with my bare bones 16". Last I checked we arent engaging much at max effective range. I'm far more concerned about 0- 50 probably max of 150, than beyond. My dept is actually doing alot to get us more gear but the process involves alot of things between budget, politics (internal and external) and committees that may or may not know anything about what they are selecting. Guess who the last people to have input on the gear we carry is....the end user? yeah.

Serenity now! |
Ours is everything on the list above minus boots and small flashlights. @jljones - that's surprising.. any insight into why those are not provided? ------------------------------------------------ 9/11/01 Never Forget "In valor there is hope" - Tacitus

My PD issues Glock, ammo, body armor, radio and a Taser. They give you $1500 a year to buy your other stuff Sensitive and caring since August 2009 Some people are like a Slinky....not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.

My guess is that that is a hold over from the old days (late 80s/early 90s) when deputies had to provide everything, and now the agency has grown so much that they couldn't afford to buy everyone all that gear to make it up years later.

Sounds like your department buys computers the same place mine does.

My old agency issued everything except underwear and socks. When an item would wear out, you would request a replacement. At the end, we even started issuing BUGs to those officers that didn't buy their own - a list was started and guns were issued from the 10% of the guns that the range could keep from the seized/evidence guns that were going to be destroyed. Range staff would go through the guns each year and earmark those guns that would make suitable BUGs for officers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tomorrow's battle is won during today's practice.

My agency provided me with uniforms, an ID card and an ID card on a lanyard, a raincoat, soft body armor, a pager, 2 badges and duty ammo. I had no problem with providing everything else. Retired Texas Lawman

I didn't see an IPOK listed. Not a LEO, but my agency doesn't hand those out either, despite handing out everything but taser (that's coming). I bought my own in the event I have to use it on myself or a fellow guard. It's not something that gets used everyday (thankfully) but with the recent spate of LEOs being targeted, it should be considered.

We are issued everything to start. After that we get $750 a year to replace worn out uniforms and equipment. They take $50 a year out of our uniform allowance for replacement body armor. After five years they take your $250 and pay the rest for a new vest. We are issued a tourniquet as well and training g to use them properly from the rescue guys. All cars have a “call out bag” a tourniquet in there as well along with a pressure bandage, couple glow sticks, master key card for all schools, floor plans of all schools and major businesses I believe, a 30 round AR mag, and a Glock mag. A water rescue kit, fire extinguisher, a couple of those electric traffic flare things, broom, and stop strips. I am issued a 11.5 inch Commando so that is nice to get out of the cruiser . We are issued two 30 round and one 20 round mag. You can have all you want after that but, you buy them. Our in car computers are Ok. They are thinking about trying tablets now. The report writing system we have sucks though. Superion or Sungaurd or Sunbeam whatever it’s called. User unfriendly as all get out. They got sold a bill of goods I believe. Should have kept Tracs lot easier to use. Per contract the city pays for bi-annual physicals from your doctor as well since that is what they wanted. Not a bad deal in my opinion.

No matter where you go, policing is the same. Ours are Toughbooks which are aptly described as $200 computers in a $3000 case.

The only thing I buy is socks, t-shirts and boots. Hell, they gave me a new 2018 Tahoe to tear-ass around in too. ______________________________ Men who carry guns for a living do not seek reward outside of the guild. The most cherished gift is a nod from his peers.

What do I need? Not much right now, got all the gear and we are in the process of upgrading gear and weapons. I would like ballistic shields in a couple of our vehicles. What do I want? To retire tomorrow with full pension.
