Lead slingin' Parrot Head ![]() |
Sheriff Steve Reams of rural Weld county in Colorado and his deputies are dealing with the same spikes in crime that many other areas are. Decriminilization and reduced bond legislation over the last few years have tied his hands as several judges are ordering the release of criminals from his jail... only to commit multiple other crimes. Many Weld county residents are angry about the crime spike and would ask Sheriff Reams why he wasn't addressing it and he'd explain what was happening and why. Keeping with the idea of transparency, he came up with a new way to communicate to the public just what/ who was responsible for the catch and release policy leading to more crime. His new idea is gaining some traction, and other sheriffs are starting to contact him to learn more and considering if they want to implement the same policy in their counties. The @ 37 minute interview includes more info and context and is worth watching, but it does cover other topics other than just his new policy... but, for those who don't want to watch the entire video, his policy is now to post daily reports of jail activities on his official website. A daily arrest report had already previously been posted, including suspect names and their charges, but now a separate report of suspects released from his jail is posted, including the disposition of their court hearings and includes the names of the judges that issued the orders to release them from jail. That right there can be a handy piece of information to have come election time when determining whether to retain a judge. ![]() Sheriff Reams says these new daily reports posted to the website "don't cost a dime out of my budget."
