The longest-serving head of state alive today, the only living head of state to have seen service in World War II, and one of the most consistent friends the United States has ever had.

She is not "the government," but she is absolutely an influencer. The members of her family (male and female alike) have spent a draw-dropping number of years in direct service to their country and this is directly attributable to her own example AND her expressed wishes. Many of our own citizens could learn from that example. Many of our "leaders" especially could.

I don't get the hatred (at worst) or dismissal (at best) of Elizabeth that seems common here.

She seems to have lived her life in complete fidelity to the values and virtues of western Christian democratic traditions, a credit to her species.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Man, better hope you're not on vacation in England when that happens...

Seriously? You would weep? The woman is like 135 years old.

Maybe just an American perception here, as I really don’t know many details about William or his father, but William does seem to be a more stable individual. To me his father seems a little off someway or another. Something we don’t know?

I can understand the new money, stamps and maybe passports, but I don't understand why the police and army have got to get new uniforms.

I am (barely) old enough to remember her visit to Philadelphia, this week in 1976, and the remarks she gave at Independence Hall.

I am old enough to remember her troops-- by her order-- playing OUR National Anthem at Buckingham Palace on September 12, 2001, and her (and thousands of her people) singing at Saint Paul's two days later. I am old enough to remember the stories from my grandparents' generation, and my parents' generation, and old enough to have met her husband (albeit briefly and in a very minor official capacity) on one of his visits to the U.S. in the late 90s.

Our country has few real friends in the international community. I mourn the ones we lose.

The second season of the original House of Cards had a thinly disguised Charles Prince of Wales (Michael Kitchen) succeeding and immediately trying to influence the government's policies and is opposed by conservative PM Francis Urquhart (Ian Richardson). The underlying message is that many suspect that this is something the real Charles is entirely capable of.

William will have to wait a while based on Charles' parents' longevity as well as the late Queen mum's (101).

All that matters is that it matters to the people who live there. And that’s more than enough. I don’t pay any attention to religious rituals either unless I’m caught up in them, and then I pay them the respect due to the people to whom they’re important. No sensible person is impressed by the immature cynicism expressed by those to whom it’s not important.

But let’s see a show of hands: How many here wish that our nation had been founded on Spain’s rule like Mexico, Columbia, and Venezuela?

Elizabeth II is a class act, the likes of which we might never see again. She has been a true friend of the U.S. and I admire her deeply. Some of you would do well to read her biography. An added plus for me is that she is a dyed in the wool horseman.

In fairness that yoke is nowhere close to what the relationship is today. The UK has been a loyal ally. We have shed blood in the same battlefields for generations. Sure, we don't get much of their culture, but we are friends. We don't like some of them and they don't like some of us. Cool. I don't even like some of us.

I'm not a fan of monarchies. I'm not a fan of one man being more politically elite than another. But if my brothers over there grieve, I will too. I hope Charles, should he accept the crown, rises to the stature. He seems a little confused to me and could prove an embarrassment. If it is William, I hope he is good. He will be king for far beyond my life span.

She has really lived an amazing life (and I hope she has many more years to add to it!).

The phrase is overused in my opinion, but in this case I feel it is completely warranted:

It will truly be the end of an era when she passes.

She has devoted her life to her nation and I do not think there will ever be another that can connect the old with the new like she has.

I don't know much about Charles but I respect his sons. They served their nation like real men and should be commended for it. Interesting to see how they keep the monarchy alive when it is their turn.

Someone thinks very highly of herself....huh?

If it were me, Id say give me a nice state funeral, swear in the new monarch and keep on keepin' on.

BUt to shut down the country for 12 days, with all the costs involved with that? What a waste.

Damn.... You save up for a dream vacation to the UK and the queen dies and your screwed.

I'm sure she is an amazing woman but this all seems a bit much.

How can you say that?

The Brits put on a very excellent funeral, parades, bands, horses, swords, fine uniforms, flags, ornate coaches, dignity, ceremony, choirs, trumpets.

And don't forget, everyone gets 12 days paid vacation, what's not to like ? Imagine all the stuff you could accomplish in 12 days. Or not.
