What will happen when the Queen of England dies? Login/Join

This was an interesting read for me. It sounds like England will come to a screeching halt for a while.

When Queen Elizabeth II dies, a code word will be used to inform the prime minister. The Guardian reported that this code will be, 'London Bridge is down.'

The majority of the staff at Buckingham Palace and associate properties will be sent home, according to Business Insider.

England will come to a stop to commemorate her passing. Business Insider reported that this stand-still will last about 12 days and will cost Britain a pretty penny.

The date of both the funeral and the coronation of her successor will be marked as formal holidays from that moment forward and will run the country between £1.2 billion and £6 billion ($1.6 billion to $7.9 billion).

The BBC will cancel comedy shows during the mourning period, which will end with the funeral 12 days after her death. The Daily Beast reported that if Queen Elizabeth II dies during the overnight hours, the BBC will have to stop their programming and show the BBC1 feed for the announcement.

Reporters with the BBC reportedly practice for the announcement from time to time. They also keep black clothes on hand to avoid being inappropriately dressed in the event of a death in the Royal family.

The announcement will take place at 8am GMT if the Queen dies at night.

If the announcement comes during work hours, the London Stock Exchange will most likely close.

You can expect statements of condolences to pour in from government officials and crowds of mourners to begin to assemble.

After her passing, the words to the national anthem will change too. They’ll be updated to reflect the death.

Flags will fly at half-mast and tourist attractions will close.

Meanwhile, at St. James’s Palace, an Accession Council will be underway to formally declare Queen Elizabeth II’s successor. The new monarch will then be sworn in.

After that, the nation’s politicians will swear allegiance to the new ruler.

The Queen’s body will ‘lie in state’ throughout all of this. This means her body will be held in Westminster Hall, allowing members of the public to file in and pay their respects.

During this time, there may be a vigil for the Princes, during which the Queen’s grieving male family members may be called in to relieve official guards watching over the Queen’s body.

After this period ends, the Queen will be laid to rest. She’s been involved in planning bits of her own funeral throughout her lifetime, according to The Daily Beast.

The service will be led by Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury. It’ll likely be shown around the world.

It will begin with the Queen's coffin being taken to Westminster Abbey by gun carriage.

Her body is expected to be laid to rest in any one of a number of places. Some believe she'll be burred in Balmoral while others think it'll be Sandringham. Others think she may be buried next to her father King George VI at St. George's Chapel in Windsor.

A year after the Queen’s death, the next King or Queen will be crowned. The coronation will be celebrated across the UK, new money will have to be minted, police officers and soldiers will have to get new uniforms, passports will change, as will stamps.

Just telling my wife, who asked what would happen if she decided to step down and name Prince William her successor, "if it were 150 years ago Prince Charles would likely die while riding his horse back to the castle. Probably die because of a negligent discharge of his loaded bow and arrow."

The media here will lose their collective minds. It will dwarf meaningful news for a week or more.

Short answer: a lot of people will try desperately to figure out how to avoid Prince Charles becoming King.

As Americans this is pretty foreign to us. A good friend of mine who is native to the bahamas said when he was a kid he had an argument with a friend about whether the queen went to the bathroom or not. His friend didnt think the queen did that.

Yep, she was thought to be one step this side of godlike being, so no need to poop like normal folk.

So none of this is surprising.

It might matter if the monarchy was anything more than vestigial figurehead.

Just an ongoing soap opera nobody outside of britain could care any less about.

I really hope Charles does the smart thing and passes on the throne. He's going to be 70 and no one is going to want to deal with all this in a few years.

It would be poetic justice to never have a Boomer King.

Could the same happen to our president in, say, 125 years?

Find ourselves in a place where the attorney general, head of FBI, and head of CIA running the executive branch and the people elect the star dé jour.

IDK. Seems to me he has been patiently waiting for most of his life. Hard to believe he'd pass it up. Of course there is the whole Camilla thing. Isn't she taboo in royal circles?

No. As a nation we are far more obsessed with actors and tween pop stars. As far as useless pomp goes, were already there, it just doesnt grind the country to a halt when they die. I think I need a snickers.

Why a few years? Both his parents are in their 90’s and still rolling.

He could easily be around 15-20 years.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

I will likely shed tears, and I am not one of her subjects.

The longest-serving head of state alive today, the only living head of state to have seen service in World War II, and one of the most consistent friends the United States has ever had.

She is not "the government," but she is absolutely an influencer. The members of her family (male and female alike) have spent a draw-dropping number of years in direct service to their country and this is directly attributable to her own example AND her expressed wishes. Many of our own citizens could learn from that example. Many of our "leaders" especially could.

I don't get the hatred (at worst) or dismissal (at best) of Elizabeth that seems common here.

Why the code phrase “London Bridge is down”? I mean, just say the Queen is dead. For crying out loud.

Maybe just an American perception here, as I really don’t know many details about William or his father, but William does seem to be a more stable individual. To me his father seems a little off someway or another. Something we don’t know?
