Cigarettes don't burn hot enough to light gasoline vapors. I don't know about ethanol, but a quick net.search indicates it probably can be lit. Yet another argument against gasahol!

The reason there are "No Smoking" signs at gas station is because of lighters, not cigarettes.

Yes, far and away, the best advice.

as the average Joe, good advice,

however,

working in the hood, in the Grocery biz, with a detached Fuel Station (we sold gas and Diesel) has it's issues,

happened to be in the fuel station one day, (I usually went over at beginning and end of shift and sometimes gave the clerks breaks, )

so, , me the Store Manager, sitting in the kiosk , in the hood some most transactions are cash at the window,

bubba the redneck rolls up to pump 4, inside right from the kiosk, gets out, lights up, and comes to the window to pre pay for some gas,

I ask politely for him to put it out,
he keeps smoking,
I ask again, politely, and remind him he is at a gas station,

he looks, says no, and tells me again how much he needs,

I stopped, got up from the stool, walked out the kiosk with a fire extinguisher in hand and told him, he could put it out, or I would,

he started whining like a little bitch and put it out, got his gas and left,

Yeah, unless you are riding on or driving a big red truck and you fight fires for a living, I’d leave it alone. Although having one of those three gallon water bottles they keep would be a hoot! Hose him down and then dare him to fight all three fire fighters on the rig.

The first job I got in Jr. High was running around for parts , sweeping floors etc.

He only smoked one cigarette a day after lunch.

He always tossed it on the only gas spot on the floor.

I waited for it to blow,
. . . . . Nothin never.

It's the fumes, or so Iam told

I'm sure you mean well , but mind your own business . The odds of an explosion or fire were slim to none . The odds of an altercation with someone that may be armed , or just doesn't want to be judged by a stranger are much higher .

Leave it alone. At that pressure of gasoline and that distance to ignition it's fine. If it wasn't, cars would've already ignited it.

If you really see somebody doing something dangerous (eg filling 55 gallon trash can in their rear seat while smoking. BTW, true story and yes meth was involved) hit the red ESD button. Tell the station attendant why you did it and he/she will sort it out and determine if police need to be called.

You can't blow up a gas pump smoking a cigarette. Is it a bad idea ? Sure. Is it a serious accident waiting to happen ? Not really. Liquid gasoline won't explode, only the fumes will combust, but they won't explode. Ever used gasoline to light a pile if firewood or trash ? Is it a good idea ? No. Is it deadly ? Not at all. Unless you douse yourself with the stuff and set yourself on fire. There is not enough liquid gas or gasoline fumes at a gas station to create any kind of situation you may see in an action movie. Good lord dude, do some research before you get yourself charged with assault. If I was worried about a dude smoking while pumping gas, I'd leave and finish up at another station. I don't think I've ever known a situation where smokers are lighting up gas stations. If it was a thing there would be different technology for pumping gas.

Only if you think he isn't able to read the no smoking sign that is sure to be posted around the pump and you think he's never come across the idea that one should not smoke where there are flamable fumes and you think he'll be eternally grateful for you for teaching him a very important safety lesson.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I've put a cig out in a can of gas, doesn't ignite.
I wouldn't strike a match above a can of gas, in the vapor.

Not worth getting involved with. If so inclined tell the clerk on duty. That’s why they are paid the big bucks to deal with things like that. And most likely they’ll ignore it too.

The less interaction with strangers in a volatile (no pun intended) situation the better off you are.

And if all else fails it could make for an interesting newscast at 6 P.M.
