It wasn't the PI's son in the Perry Mason movies. He was the son of Barbara Hale who played Perry's secretary Della Street.

Yup, William Katt who went on to star in The Greatest American Hero TV show. He also screen tested for the part of Luke Skywalker. There is video of the screen test floating around where is auditioning with Kurt Russel - who was auditioning for the role of Hans Solo.
