As I get older I don't want/need more 'junky', fill-in birthday or Christmas gifts from family and friends so I would like to ask them ahead of time to make a small donation to "x" charity in my name. TIA for any direction to a worthy cause.

I've given to St. Jude's and the DAV for years.

I was getting my hair cut a couple months ago and I can't remember why it was brought up, but the lady that was cutting my hair said her daughter was treated at St. Jude and she wasn't charged a dime.

Local animal shelters; I stay away from the national organizations.

What I always hate about giving to charitable organizations is mail spamming you get for the next several years. I once helped a friend on a National Multiple Sclerosis Society fund drive and got bombarded with mail for years begging for money.

Galilean Christian Home
https://www.galileanhomeministries.org/

A home for special needs children and adults.

quote:
The Galilean Home, located in the rolling hills of Liberty, Kentucky has been serving children and young adults since 1969. It is a non-profit ministry founded by Jerry and Sandy Tucker, with the simple purpose of helping those that need help and loving those that need love.

Back in the early 70’s, after several unsuccessful years of trying to start their own family, the couple was able to adopt a three-and-a-half-month old boy with medical problems who had been given up by his teen-aged mother. Since that time, they could not say no to any child that came into their lives from local adoptions to many from Haiti and Honduras. Sandy said, “I don’t think God gave me time to think about it. We took every child God sent us – One person’s pain is another person’s joy. Sandy Tucker knew the goodness of God.

The Whittington Center

If you are a shooter and have not been there, you owe it to yourself to go. September is the best time to go.

I’m partial to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF).

quote:

Since 1980, Special Operations Warrior Foundation has honored the sacrifice of America’s heroes by standing with their families. Our “enduring promise” is to provide “cradle to career” educational support for the children of fallen Special Operators, children of active-duty Special Operators whose spouse has passed, and all Medal of Honor Recipients. We also deliver immediate financial assistance to severely wounded, injured, and ill active-duty Special Operators. Guided by this mission, we ensure these families are never left behind.

There are charitable causes all around you without having to seek out National Organizations.

I solved that problem. I have a small supply of checks that do not have my address printed on them, just my name. I use these for anything where I do not want to get on a mailing list.

Two great places:

1) St. Jude. You can be somewhat specific where the money goes, such as medical research, hotel/motel costs for families with kids undergoing surgery/therapy, etc.

2) The Gladney Center for Adoption in Fort Worth is a nationally-known and respected agency, and they have a program for donating money to help adoptive parents cover the huge costs of going through the long vetting process.

I suggest Niceville Wrestling Academy. It is a non-profit and every coach is a volunteer. The coaches are all enlisted Green Berets and the students are mostly the children of military members. I think wrestling is the best thing we can do for our youth. If you would like to donate:

Never give to the CFC. Always directly to the specific charity you select.

That's your own personal call. There are lots of great charities that do wonderful, efficient work making progress on things that won't float your boat. Not that they're not worthy, but why not target your giving to your own priorities?

What you might do is think about what kinds of things you'd like to support, say XYZ, and then see if people know good charities working on XYZ.

My primary charity is for abused women and children. My exwife was horribly abused by her step father. That is one of the reasons she could not remain married. That was a long time ago.

There are some good sites that rate charities. They look at salaries and percentage of donations that are spent on fundraising versus actual works . Charity Navigator is one .
