+1 on the MARPAC white noise machines. We've bought two, and the single speed works great and is adjustable in terms of tone / loudness.

They're USA-made as of a few years ago too.

Good customer service as well. I had one that developed a buzz after a year or so. I sent it back, and had a new one shipped to me post haste, no hassle.

I bought this one for the wife for her birthday in December. It has several settings, a sleep mode, and a remote. Working well so far:

Circling back with a range report - ended up settling on this model and it's been great the past couple weeks. Not sure how anybody would use it on high setting, that would sound like an airplane overhead. I've been using it on low speed with ~4 of the 8 air holes adjusted open. Very similar to having the HVAC fan running continuously - love it.

The RelaxMelodies app for smartphones will do evdrything you want, is obviously very portable for travel, and won't cost a fortune.

Mrs. Angus and I use our phones when we travel and prefer "brown noise" over all other sounds.

My fiancee uses one (old style that actually draws air in and makes the noise), there is a digital one in my daughters room, we have it set to the ocean waves crashing and man let me tell you it works. She was having a bad night when we converted her crib to a toddler bed and wanted me to lay on the floor while she fell asleep...that damn thing worked so good it put me to sleep too

Like @DMF, I use the RelaxMelodies app. I have mine set to sound like an oscillating fan with a thunderstorm. Pretty relaxing.

However, there’s another use I get out of it. I have it set to turn off gradually—it steadily gets quieter over several minutes until it’s off—in the ten minutes or so before my alarm is scheduled to go off.

The gradual change from white noise to no noise wakes me up gently before the alarm goes off (which I then cancel preemptively).

For those who find an alarm jarring and setting the wrong mood first thing, this might be worth a try!

White noise can vary by person. For me, white noise is the sound of a fan. At home I have an air purifier running. When I used to travel A TON I needed something for hotels where I couldn’t run the air conditioner fan all the time. I downloaded an app for my iPad that mimics a fan and it works great. I also use my iPad as my alarm clock at home or when in a hotel. I don’t think my app has other sounds than a fan, but I don’t think I could sleep to any other sound.

My wife likes white noise at night, I don't care so much, but I am VERY particular about the noise. Every digital app is just a file on repeat, and my brain can pick out the cycle for the repeat almost always (when we don't have the machine, I have to layer 3 or more white noise apps to lose the repeat cycles).

This is what we have, https://marpac.com/products/dohmclassic, and it's awesome. No speaker, no sound files, pure analog noise. It is adjustable to give you different tone and volume. There is no break for your ears to pick up on and drive you nuts trying to fall asleep...

Well, I truly prefer silence.

But that's probably caused by the fact that we've raised six children. The youngest is now 16...

I've been using a cleanable HEPA filter, which helps with the inversions in the winter time. There is not a rain setting, however.

I sleep with headphones on mostly listening to music at the lowest setting, and sometimes use the free app called "Relax Melodies" from Apple app store. They have customizable sounds with not only white noise, but apparently there is also pink and brown noise. I like the fact that you can also adjust each individual sound's volume as you add different elements.
usually I just make a mixture of white noise along with rain.

I get paid for my white noise machine, its called Tinnitus thanks to a tour of duty in Iraq, however I think it would be better to have better hearing.
