My Ridgeline has Michelin Defenders on it. Ended up with a flat tire. Took it off and to a local tire shop. It has a small puncture. Not on the side wall but close. They said using the two finger rule it is considered a sidewall puncture and would not repair?
These tires were like new when I bought the rig. But I have no paperwork for the tires. I am thinking they were bought at costco by the PO but can not confirm. The tires have more than half their life left.
So am I screwed and have to buy a new set?

The spare is one of the smaller tires. Not an actual spare.

Costco is and 1-1/2 away.

Thoughts or advice. Thanks guys.

Go to costco and see if they were bought there (by vin #) and see if the warranty follows the tires if sold.

Worth a shot anyway.

Worth checking with Costco, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

If it isn't covered, the best option is to buy a whole new set.

Second best option if you can't swing that is to buy two new tires and keep the two best out of the remaining three.

Either way, you'll end up with 1-3 leftover good tires, so it may be worth exploring also snagging an extra used rim and have one tire mounted as a full size spare. IIRC, my old Gen 1 Ridgeline would accommodate a full size spare, but no idea about the Gen 2s.

Thanks guys, since it is an awd I am told I would need to replace all four.

Looking at it from a safety viewpoint helps. Blowouts at 70 mph are no fun. You can probably get some tire shop to repair it but you are taking a chance.

Would it be that bad to just replace the one with a new Defender?

You cannot do that 6guns. No shop would allow you to do that I am almost sure.

And with it being an awd vehicle that is definitely a no go.

Yes it sucks. I bought a used showroom condition Jeep Grand Cherokee with 23k miles on it. It had all new tires on it. I thought that a little odd… Found out why soon enough. The AWD transfer case failed almost immediately, required a new one!

Turns out the previous owner had apparently damaged and thus run a mismatch set of tires.

Fortunately, I had bought an extended warranty… something I almost never do… but the factory warranty was out. It covered the repair no questions asked and the warrantee has already paid for it’s self!

Filed that away for things to remember, never run mis-matched set tires on an all-wheel-drive!

I think the manual says it’s OK up to a 3% difference in circumference.

I wouldn’t do it, but I suppose it would be OK to find one that fit that criteria, even if it was a different brand.

I might do it on a seldom used car or an old beater if it’s circumference matched virtually perfect when mounted and aired up.

I can assure you a new transfer case cost more than a set of tires. Eek

Endeavor to persevere.

Check with your local Honda or Toyota dealer and ask if they have any take-offs. Some times people buy a new vehicle but want different tires. The dealer then sells those tires at a deeply reduced price. I got 4 new Bridgestones for both my 4Runner and FJ Cruiser doing this for under $500 per set installed.

Supposedly there are tire dealers that can shave a tire to match your others.

I have heard and read about it, but not seen it in our little market up here.

ETA: Nokians for the win! Failing that winning buy, we had Firestone Destination AT, then AT2, tires on the Pilot and they were great.

And, wtf are Hercules tires? Chinesium Maypops?

2 options you might not have considered.

1. Check with local used tire shops. Normally I wouldn't buy tires used, but you might be able to find a shop that has a matching tire with similar tread depth to the good ones on your vehicle.

2. See if any of the local shops will shave a new one down for you. It seems wasteful, but in your situation it's less wasteful to to shave half the tread off a new tire than it is to replace the three with plenty of life left. Tire rack apparently offers this service for $25-30 a tire if you can't get it done locally.

"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Get one of these kits

Take off the tire, air it up and have at it with the kit

Try discount tire for the repair. I once had a tire with about 5k miles get a puncture near the sidewall. Dealer refused as did another tire shop. DT called the tire manufacturer and they told him so long as the inside of the patch lays flat and doesn’t curl up the sidewall you are GTG. They fixed it no charge. That was 30 years ago and I rarely look anywhere else for tires.

Outside plug kits are good for emergencies but I won’t rely on one long term unless it’s a tiny hole.

Nope, American made and have a good reputation supposedly.

I talked to my Honda guy. He is really good. He said Honda's awd are mainly fwd with some rear assist. He said it would not be a big deal to get two tires and in lieu of replacing all four. r. Which I found interesting.

If you cheap out on the parts of your truck that are supposed to touch the road, you'll find the parts that aren't supposed to touching it sooner rather than later.

that said I'm a HUGE hankook fan and will continue to recommend this tire

Any warranty is going to prorate them at best.
So half worn is half price.
Not sure I'd drive very far for a less than guaranteed deal like that.
