My Samsung phone is telling me the native Samsung text messaging app is being shut down in july and wants me to switch to google messenger. Apparently the newer phones have been shipped with google messenger as the default app but mine is older.

Before I give google another piece of my soul I wanted to see if anyone is using a 3rd party taxt message app and what you think of it.

Same boat. I downloaded "Signal", then found out it cannot do sms messaging. I'm now looking at Fossify, but haven't tried it or done any real research into it.

What text messaging app do non-Samsung Android phones use? I would have guessed that a built-in Android text messaging app exists.

Serious about crackers.

Google Messages works well. I quite like the pairing ability that allows you to access your messages from a browser on any computer.

You might try Textra. There is a free with ads and a paid version. The ads are not intrusive and the app is easy to setup to your liking.

I was looking at Textra and liked what I saw except they don't support RCS. Actually, no app but google does because google has not released the API for RCS to android developers.

The Samsung app I'm currently using doesn’t support RCS so it shouldn’t matter except i'm resding about issues starting with non-RCS apps missing group texts and media.

When Verizon got rid of their messaging app, I tried a few because I didn't really want to use google, but wound up reverting back to the google app anyway because all the others I tried lacked one thing or another.

The downside to google is, if you leave the backup on, it will destroy your storage and you'll get constant messages to buy larger storage from google. I disabled my backup, and I'm back to using only 40% of the included 15G of storage.

When I finally switch to the new phone, I'll enable the backup, make the switch, then disable the backup on the new phone.
