R.I.P. Astronaut Michael Collins Apollo 11
Godspeed Sir...
"We regret to share that our beloved father and grandfather passed away today, after a valiant battle with cancer. He spent his final days peacefully, with his family by his side," Collins' family wrote in a statement on Twitter. "Mike always faced the challenges of life with grace and humility, and faced this, his final challenge, in the same way. "We will miss him terribly. Yet we also know how lucky Mike felt to have lived the life he did. We will honor his wish for us to celebrate, not mourn, that life," they continued. "Please join us in fondly and joyfully remembering his sharp wit, his quiet sense of purpose, and his wise perspective, gained both from looking back at Earth from the vantage of space and gazing across calm waters from the deck of his fishing boat."

90 years old and quite a life lived. This one of those death notices that make me smile. I should hope to have lived such a life. I am surprised at the number of people who seem to feel Aldrin or even Collins were somehow cheated out of glory.

Godspeed Mr Collins! Our Gemini and Apollo astronauts were truly brave American heroes.

A Man On The Moon

Great book, must read for anyone interested in the Apollo journey.

I met him on a street corner in Washington, D.C. once back in the 80's. I said hello general, and thanked him for his courageous accomplishments to the United States.

Don't. drink & drive, don't even putt.

R.I.P. Mr. Collins

quote:
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air… .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high un-trespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

— John Gillespie Magee, Jr

It repeats each generation. My son is 17 and was fully aware of the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing. He's seen Apollo 13, The Right Stuff, From Earth to the Moon, First Man, and other historical adaptations.

Today after telling me Michael Collins died (I had already heard), he asked if Buzz Aldrin was still alive.

He's also pretty knowledgable about 60's/70's Formula 1 and GT/GTP endurance racing. Yesterday he was watching "Rush", and he's watched both the documentaries and movies about "Ford v. Ferrari".

Old men that went really fast. Seems to be his thing.

RIP, and well done, sir.

Summer of 1969, I watched "One small step..." live on TV. Seems like a world ago.
