A good friend recently upgraded to the F350 with the turbo diesel. He has a 25+5 goose neck trailer that he uses to pull his tractor. I believe he can pull nearly 30,000 lbs. The turbo diesel has lots of power.

As a comparison, my Ram Laramie with the 5.7 Hemi only pulls 10,800 lbs.

Pick trailer, read capacity plate on tongue, get pickup that exceeds gross capacity on plate by what you want to throw in the back and cab of truck. Don't overload trailer, pull it around where you want to go. Build larger garage, because long bed crew cabs don't fit in normal garage and it is stupid to leave 70K truck out in weather. Hopefully a year later wife will not decide she does not want to ride hay burners, and instead wants to take up clog dancing. Good luck!

Who cares if a crew cab dually won’t fit in a standard garage? My Tundra barely fits in a standard garage. And I mean barely. And it stays outside. Some of the stuff being spewed about in this thread is ridiculous.

Its not smart to tow close to the max rating of any vehicle. I don’t care how long someone has towed something ‘without any problems’, if the shit hits the fan the op is the ONLY one that is going to be there trying to keep himself, his wife, and his horses from being hurt or killed. If he can well afford a dually, he has that option.

Right in the first post and what I originally based my recommendation on:

quote:
we have figured it shouldn’t be more than 12,000# fully loaded with 4 horses

But I looked up a few of these 4 horse living quarters trailers and found the lowest GVWR of 16,000lbs most were 21,000 pounds. Also, they all seem to have the axles under where the horses are (which makes sense) and that's all the way in the back of the trailer. That's got to be a lot of fun to tow around corners and back up. He's going to want the F450 because its wide track axle gives a better turning radius than the F350.

Yes, more info is needed from the OP. That 14k# example is steel with living quarters. I’m guessing that is the upper end. You’ll notice the aluminum four horse trailer with tack room was less than 5k. If there is such a thing as a four horse aluminum trailer with living quarters, it is going to be a LOT lighter than 14k. 1250 isn’t a bad round number guess for a horse weight, but there are plenty that are closer to or even under a 1000#, and there are plenty of draft breeds that would make 1250 look positively svelte.

I’d think the OP needs to do some comparison shopping. A cheaper trailer will be heavier, which may require more truck (and more expense on the truck). Depending on how important living quarters in the trailer are, and how expensive they are, one may decide they can get along just fine with a nice tack room and stay in a lot of hotels for the trailer and truck savings.

I’d think that going to horse shows is a little different than going “horse camping”. There will always be a hotel near a horse show. Whether one wants to go that route may be a different story...

I'm thinking that you want a dually given the numbers you're working with, and the chance that you may want to step up to more animals.

As an aside, I'd recommend you look at an f450 if you're considering the f350. You get much bigger brakes, a widetrack front axle (significantly reduces turning radius). The downside would be that your axle ratios are much lower than the f350 (if the truck is going to be used as a DD), and some insurance companies require commercial insurance while others don't...

Just for giggles I built a F-450 4x4 crew cab xlt diesel and it came out under 65K so you can probably get it for something in the mid 50’s...not bad.

I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a horse person but have a couple of friends who are.

In talking to them about transporting their horses the issue is what to do with the horses when you’re on a multi day trip. This is where the living quarters comes in handy as many stay in campgrounds that cater to horse people where they park their rig next to a coral so that the horses can get out of the trailer and walk around a bit.
You probably can’t do that if you’re staying in a hotel..

Think I’m gonna get the dually thanks everyone. Better to have more truck than potentially not enough in the future so that makes the most sense to me.

A trailer sales person will tell you that your F150/1500 will pull the 15000 lb trailer they are trying to sell you.

A truck sales person will tell you that the F150/1500 he is trying to sell you will easily pull the 15000 lb trailer.

Pull? Probably.
Stop? Not so much.
