But the objection to these types of barriers it seems to me is more to do with adults who don't want to have to go through the hassle and indignity of posting up their ID to watch smut on the internet than anything else.

Sure children have the wisdom of Solomon. All you have to do is reason with them to help them avoid content that they themselves will undoubtedly agree is bad for their development and preparation for well-adjusted adulthood. Give a 12 year old the choice to go into a bar and have a shot and beer, with proper formation should be no problem for them to avoid.

100% agreed. And COVID proved your scenario isn't far fetched; tyrants are constantly at the gates trying to steal freedom in the name of safety.
