I encourage you to visit.

The wife and I went two months ago. It's a beautiful old town. Lot's of history and places to eat. Very touristy and artsy. Seems lots of folks go to party; we aren't into that...

It's south of the gnat line tho.

I know someone who retired and moved to Tybee Island. Last I heard, he moved back inland after that big storm.

I was out there in late 2014 - saw one of the container ships coming in. Got back to Savannah in time for a major storm (you know, the type that comes out of nowhere, dumps a LOT of rain, then disappears) to watch the same ship pass the hotel where we were attending a conference.

I work in Savannah at Hunter Army Airfield but live more than an hour away. It's a nice town with plenty of amenities, but lots of crime and lots of undesirable people. When I PCS to my next duty station I won't be too heartbroken. Definitely check it out but stay away from downtown once it gets dark, it's too dangerous.

I've enjoyed my times in Savannah immensely with a few of my favorite memories there. For Savannah however, the violent crime rate is one of the highest in the nation, across communities of all sizes (both large and small). Violent offenses tracked included rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, including assault with a deadly weapon.

I've been quite a few times, fun place to visit, maybe you could find out how she selected Savannah and we could help with answers. My wife and I discuss Charleston and the Jacksonville areas for retirement, I think there is more to do at both but lots of pros/cons each way. Let us know what she says and we can dig deeper, gun laws are good either way.

Live in Charleston. Take day trips to Savannah.

I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888

Great state to live in, ( for the firearms friendly laws ) but I'd avoid settling directly in Savannah, for the reasons the others have mentioned.

I've never had too much in the way of problems whenever I've ran around Savannah, but I'm in and back out, plus armed up to the teeth. I know and talk with several LEOs in Savannah, Garden City, etc, and the constant stories I hear from them are solid reminders to stay on my toes when passing through those towns.

I settled here after I retired several years ago. While on active duty, I lived just down the road from Hunter. After I retired, I bought a home outside of Rincon. Keeps one out away from the hustle and bustle of the cities, but close enough for a quick drive into town for groceries and other amenities. Also, when the occasional bad storm comes through and knocks out power, being outside of the major population centers and the craziness that could go on makes life during those times a little less tense.

I'd recommend looking at the smaller, but growing cities around Savannah such as Rincon, Pooler, etc.

If y'all decide to settle, appy for your GWCL - Georgia Weapons Carry License. It allows one to purchase firearms without a NICS check, some shops give a price discount for GWCL holders and there's thirty + states that reciprocate with Georgia.

I love Savannah. It certainly is hot and humid in the summer. Lots of cool history. Grave yards are historic.

There was a book written several years ago called "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". It was also made into a movie, but the book is MUCH better. Everyone there still refers to it as "The Book" in Savannah.

I recommend you read "the book" before you go.

I also think that Paula Deen's place, Lady and Sons, was very over-rated.

Lived in GA for 15 years. Liked the people, liked the state. Hated the state income tax and hated anything Atlanta.

Savannah is a nice enough place to visit. Don't think I would do well living near the coast.

I'm in Savannah all week for work and I think others have said it well.

Touristy with history, and quite violent downtown. There's always just north to Charlestown or a little further south towards Florida.

Savannah is nice and is on a short list of places I'd live. I spent a lot of time there as a kid.

But if it were me I'd look at the surrounding areas, depending on what you want. Bluffton, SC is halfway between Savannah and HHI. HHI is great if you like fishing and golf. And then south of Savannah you have St Simons and Sea Island. And of course Charleston is a nicer, cleaner, probably more expensive version of Savannah. They're similar cities, just at different price points. Amd then way down in Florida theres Fernandina and Amelia, both really lovely.

It all depends on what you want out of your retirement.

That's what i was going to suggest. The ex's family lives there and as of my last visit in the early 2000s, that was a wonderful town to be in (and walk around at night). Do not slow down in of near North Charleston though. Wink
