I like songs that tell a story, whether it's serious, heartfelt, or just funny. Country is really good at that. I was a child of the 90s... And another more recent artist who I like: There's even room for Canadians, lol:

Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do. |
A lot of the songs mentioned may be country but aren't preceived that way by many. For me, if it's got TWANG I ain't listening. Integrity is doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking.

While in NYC for a recording contract, Steve Goodman and John Prine got outrageously drunk and wrote a country song that had every element of all country songs: prison, standing in the rain, pickup trucks, etc. Goodman recorded it on his first album in 1971, but the song became well known when David Allen Coe recorded it four years later. You can find it on YouTube, performed by either Goodman or Coe. "You Never Even Called Me By My Name." הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

the song 'Hot Dog" - Led Zepplin and, anything by the Marshall Tucker Band, Where We All Belong - is one of my favorite albums -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- All his life he tried to be a good person. Many times, however, he failed. For after all, he was only human. He wasn't a dog.” ― Charles M. Schulz

"I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . I love this song, and hate it at the same time, which is part of the essence of good country. Like it or hate it, it is undeniably beautiful. Do not listen if you are drunk, or missing your lady. Honest to God, Alison Krauss could make the phone book sound good. "I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation." Or, for those of a more modern bent... "I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation." Alfred Hornik, Sunday, December 2, 1945 to his family, on his continuing duty to others for surviving WW II.
