I drop my used oil at Walmart auto center when they're closed.
I leave it in bagged marked containers at the roll up door.

Autozone and O'Reilly want me to go into the back and pour the oil into their drums, no thanks.

Here the trash company will take up to 2 gallons on your weekly trash/recycle day. Needs to be in a clear/translucent 1 gallon container (to see/ensure no antifreeze in it). Marked "used oil" on the container. They take the containers and put them in a storage location on the trucks. They will not pick it up if it is in the original oil containers (those just go in regular trash). I just keep a few old clear 1 gallon containers in the garage. If you can't wait for trash day there are rotating household hazardous waste locations you can bring it to as well as the various auto parts stores mentioned in this thread.

Then they have to pay to get rid of it as hazardous waste, instead of getting paid for it as used oil.

That's what I was guessing when I first saw it but how would they know who had anti-freeze in their oil? There are hundreds of names on their sheets.

Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do.

Before I retired I would just bring it to work and dump it in one of our waste oil drums.

Our town has a municipal recycling center. They've got two big containers outside so you can access them 24/7...one for oil and the other for antifreeze. I have a ton of vehicles, and do a lot of oil changes, so I just dump the old oil back into the 5qt jug that the new oil came out of and save them up until I have 15 or 20, then throw them in the back of the truck and take them in.

They used to have dumpsters for the plastic jugs, too, but I guess people were abusing those so they got rid of them. The empty jugs now go in the dumpster at work.

What's next, a form every time the recycle truck takes your recycle?

Is that a Utah required thing? I'm up in the Wasatch and haven't taken used oil for maybe 2 years, but always at a variety of places had to write my name and address, then sign the form. I've got 5 gallons to recycle whenever I remember it. I may "forget" to bring my cellphone. Or maybe leave it in the car a la Para.

Pretty sure its a State thing (possibly county I guess) The kicker is that the site it directs you to is majorly messed up. It asks for the quantity and lists several options. But for some reason only one of them works. I think it was the 1 gallon option but won't swear to it.

We were rarely asked, but my former workplace had no problem taking waste oil, provided there was no antifreeze in it. It fuels the waste-oil heater in the winter. The affiliated body shop also uses it in their heater. Those will burn pretty much any combustible liquid, even those not petroleum-based like brake fluid.

I do recall being asked that once too, was told they don't / cannot accept from business(es).

I personally do not know what car type business will have less than 15 quarts to dispose of though...

I do not understand the “requirement” to fill out a form… please explain the reasoning behind it and the theoretical societal benefit.

I’ve had my best luck with Auto Zone here in Texas. I just show the guy and he points to the back where I empty the oil into the large tank. Sometimes I’ll bring 3-5, 5 quart containers too.
