Years ago I bought my Oakley “Whisker” sunglasses. Primarily because they provide 10x light attenuation, but also because they suit my face well.

I hadn’t worn them for several years, but after my cataract surgery I’m needing them again. And I’m glad for that.

Up until my cataract surgery about 20 years ago, I couldn't wear ordinary sunglasses. First thing I did after my eyes healed was to buy a pair of Ray-Ban Aviators.

I have worn them since and am now wearing the polarized version. I do a lot of driving and my eyes don't get sore or irritated. Lenses can be purchased cheaply from Amazon.

How are glasses sizing specified in terms of physical head size, not in terms of optical centering and all that. For example, Regular vs Large ?

As near as I can tell glasses have 3 dimensions (with respect to head size): lens width, bridge width, and ear piece length, which is the least important to me, especially for some styles of ear pieces.

Generally speaking a narrow/medium face probably looks best with a 52 - 53mm lens width;
Medium face (most people) about 55mm
Large is 58 - 59mm.

I suppose bridge width is a consideration, but I’m mostly looking at lens width.

I know these are cheap sunglasses but they have good clarity and color well beyond the price. Similar to Oakley Iridium color wise. The lens are very thin plastic, the frames sturdy enough. For any usage with the possibility of damage or loss, these are a great choice. I have one in every vehicle. On Amazon look for KALIYADI Polarized Sunglasses, Mens, black/black/black.

By the way, 10x attention is about 3.3 f-stops.

If you are a vet then Oakley SI sells Oakleys cheap. I like Oakley but I agree with the above. Serengeti is hands down a better lens for flying and driving. Their brown drivers are amazing. And $$$.

I’ve been wearing Costa Del Mar for years. I’m on the water, a lot. I have two pairs for different light conditions. I have the glass lenses ($$), not the plastic. Never had any complaints.

Nothing I've found beats their lenses. I've been shopping for a new pair. My vision insurance won't cover them. I can buy them direct and discounted but they are $575 (I can use HSA money to cover that) It just grieves me that I can buy other brands but not the ones I really want.

I've given up on spending decent money on sunglasses and treat them as disposable items. The will get worn, scratched, busted, etc. I also haven't found most name brands to be worth the cost; not even close.

I've been happy with Goodr. They are cheap and are of impressive quality. Now I can afford to keep a backup pair or two at the ready.

I have several pairs of Ray Ban Aviators all made by Bausch & Lomb and one pair of Ray Ban Wayfarers also made by Bausch & Lomb. My favorite is my pair of Ray Ban "The General 50th Anniversary(1937-1987)" sunglasses. I haven't purchased sunglasses in probably 35 years. I did consider the Serengeti sunglasses at one point several years ago. They looked pretty good!

I used to have my favorites I would swear by beginning in the ‘80s, but after learning many of the major brands are owned by a few foreign companies, I stopped being tied to any brand anymore. I’m not saying it is like GM making Cadillacs and Chevys on the same line, but I wouldn’t doubt there is a lot of cross technology and quality between the brands.

Over time, I wore Varnet, Ray Ban, Sun Cloud Rose, Gargoyle, and much later, Costa and Oakley. I had a minor brand from Big 5 sports for a while, but eventually went back to the others.

I’m not in the market right now, but if I was, I would look for something that reduces fog better than my Costas. I wear a face gaitor a lot while out in the sun due to previous skin cancer, and my glasses easily fog. I’ve used anti-fog wipes, but I’m not happy with the results.

This isn’t here nor there, but my holy Grails were Serengetis. They were always just out of my reach - either by my enlisted pay or later, my tight-fisted wife. At 62, I may splurge for a pair to see what I’ve been missing.

Slight rant about Costa... Had a warranty issue with some progressive lenses delaminating. They gave me and the optician the run around. Took about 6 months to resolve. That experience left me a bit sour.

I've been pretty happy with my MJ's - though they didn't have any frames I liked compatible with progressive lenses the time I went w/Costa.

Those Serengeti's look nice - I'll have to put the bug in my optician's ear to start carrying those...

I had a couple pairs of metal framed Ray Bans, but the ear pieces kept cracking and falling apart. I switched to costa (glass lenses) a couple of years ago and have been really happy with them. I got a pair in amber and smoked when bass pro was running them for buy one, get one half off.

I had thought that Jomashop.com was only for watches, but as it turns out, they have a bunch of nice sunglass brands as well.

I wear Oakley or ray ban. The Oakley military discount is a big reason. One thing I don’t like is after a while, they stop supporting older models with parts and lenses. I have a 20+ year old pair with some sentimental value ( worn through both Iraq and Afghanistan) and had to get aftermarket lenses as they no longer supported that frame type.

Serving, and on the water daily I started with Oakleys Razors back in the late 80s. Then went to Maui Jim’s and coasta Del Mar’s (dropped those over the side when working a SAR case). When I left Active duty and began Policing, I grabbed a pair of Oakley Jackets.

Finally got a pair of Ray Bans New Wayfarers after the oakleys got broken in a fight. I’ve worn ray bans since maybe 2005-eventually getting older and having to have my prescription put in those frames.

I’ve had one set break because I dropped them several times-but that’s on me. The set I have now are 10 years old and still GTG.
