Any experience with Deka (East Penn) batteries?

I was going to pick up my wife from a retreat on Sunday and ... click... click... click... Roll Eyes

I put the charger on it for about 20 minutes and started it. Picked her up without turning off the 4Runner, and came home and charged it for 1.5 hours. This morning, click... click... click... again. I look a little closer at the side of the battery and find out it's from 9/2016 so it's almost 8 years old.

The reason I ask about Deka East Penn batteries is that there is a distribution center near here that will sell "seconds" for about $69, which compared to $250 for retail is pretty cheap.

Deka makes batteries for many companies, Harley Davidson for example, they are good batteries, USA made, I've bought several sets over the years for my golf cart and HD...

not sure about the seconds, haven't bought them but the others have been good.

I had a Deka in my mower for about seven years.

The Optima in my truck has been good since 2012.

Your results may vary...

DEKA plant is in Berks county PA where I also live. Been using their brand for years without issue...both standard lead acid and AGM.

I was told that the "seconds" are a cosmetic imperfection and pulled for that reason. The brand markings are removed (they don't say Deka) and they are stamped "2nd". They are tested and fully functional. They come with a 3 month no questions warranty.

IMO, it's the best made Battery available...Period! I only buy East Penn Batteries now and have been doing so since I needed a replacement for a OEM Volvo Battery in my '09 S60 that gave up the ghost. East Penn's house brand is Deka, but they rebrand under NAPA Gold and Duracell as well. Buy with confidence! Wink

Batteries+Bulbs stores stock the Duracell branded version, and that's where I purchase them...Generally the Batteries+ guys know what they're talking about when it comes to batteries. You will get many opinions on batteries, but in my experience East Penn/Deka Batteries are also FAR superior to those manufactured by Johnson Controls and Exide. Just sayin'...

Like HRK says they are the OEM supplier for H-D.

I have one of their automotive batteries in our Liberty, private label from a local farm supply store. It’s about six years old now and no problems.

Where at? Be very handy to know. Had to replace both batteries in my 3/4 ton truck in January and my wife’s car battery a month later.

Deka makes good batteries. My favorite are Interstate, but Deka is good too.

I have never had much luck with Deka batteries. I currently have one installed by the body shop after my battery was apparently damaged in the deer collision. They didn't charge me, so I can't be mad at a free battery! It was brand new.

I have had three in the past before this one, and none of them made it past two years old.

OK, so far so good. I talked with the guys in the shop. As I said above, they strip off the retail label but I asked for "the best they had" and the guy told me the one I got was the higher series (heavier, more CCA's I guess).
Anyway, it's only been 24 hours but I like it. It seems strong. I guess we'll see how long it lasts.

Chellim1 has it on the mark. No fault with the battery in operation, the seconds are cosmetic issues only. I was so interested in knowing this detail that several years ago I called the company (located just outside Reading, PA) and spoke with one of their engineers.

I have had several of their batteries and never had an issue. Glad I can buy American made.

I just looked at their website. Eastpennmanufacturing.com

They are among the world leaders in battery production, with 10,500 full time employees and 515 products. Manufacturing plants around the world.

They must be good at something.
