NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Rashes of car break-ins in New Orleans has one man fed up and fighting back. Although he still has to replace his window, he came up with a deterrent that chased away the would-be thief Friday night. “To see him like gleefully walk up and just smash my eighth window in the past couple months and jump in and then you know to see the detonation go off and his reaction,” the man described. His broken window stings a little less than the other six times this has happened over the last eight weeks. “I don’t want this guy to die for what he did, but I don’t want him to just be able to smash and grab and run away,” he said. Surveillance video shows that the window-smashing thief triggers his loud, non-lethal triggered deterrent set up in the center console of the truck. “He probably didn’t get hurt that bad, but it wasn’t pleasant and it might deter him and his friends and tell other people not to do this too because, without something like this, there is no consequence because they’re not going to get arrested,” he said. This satisfaction is not something many others can claim. link: Video won't play so I found another avenue. News at the four minute mark. video of breakin and interview with truck owner. Who has a good source for flash bangs? "Pacifism is a shifty doctrine under which a man accepts the benefits of the social group without being willing to pay - and claims a halo for his dishonesty." ~Robert A. Heinlein

It kinda looks like it didn’t hurt nearly enough, to me.

Funny enough, I thought the same thing. Seem like a firecracker versus a flash bang. A real flash bang inside a car would fuck you up. Fighting the good fight |
Real flashbangs are Destructive Devices, necessitating ATF registration and requiring approved explosive storage containers. Besides, that wasn't nearly bright enough to have been a real flashbang.

Wouldn't it also have damaged the center console. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

Given the firearms LE confiscated from this POS, him croaking would be at the bottom of my give a sh*t list. That guy had better find a place to hide his truck for the foreseeable future, given this garbage will be back, and this time to likely burn it to the ground for what he did to them. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. Way back in the early CB radio days theft was a problem, and one company made a tear gas cannister that you attached with a cable-one end to the radio, the other end to the vehicle. If the radio was yanked the tear gas went off. The solution might be worse than the problem.

I'd be worried of the criminal being harmed and then being charged with setting up a booby trap. Lawyers, is that possible?

Too bad for society it wasn't a claymore instead. This guy clearly knew he didn't belong in this truck. People talk about possessions as just possessions but fail to realize those possessions represent portion of the owner's life which was traded to an employer, personal business, or other means of trading work for compensation in exchange for the means to acquire said possessions. The owner will never get that time back. Stealing a person's possessions is no different than stealing portion of that person's life, so I'll never shed a tear for a criminal career coming to a sudden end. ------------- $

Yes, very possible, and likely probable depending on the state, i.e. Massachusetts.

One guy dealing with porch pirates rigged fake packages with cell phones to record as a spinner slung a pound of glitter everywhere. Dye bombs are a last resort, pepper spray works if aimed well. All that is good and well until someone inadvertently activates it - at 70mph? Eight times is a specific target, not random. So, who got so riled up to get even, and why?
