Pretty simple actually. One large ice ball in an appropriate glass, two shots of gunpowder rye whiskey, a teaspoon and additional dash of simple syrup, three dashes of angostura bitters and two dashes of orange bitters well stirred. I've tried this recipe with aromatic bitters as well and honestly don't feel like they improve the drink so I just stick to the angostura and orange bitters now.
I find that I prefer the taste of a rye whiskey old fashioned to a bourbon old fashioned, although a Wooford Reserves old fashioned is somewhat close in my opinion. Gunpowder is amongst my favorite rye whiskeys along with Rough Rider, but I haven't been able to get my hands on Rough Rider for a while.
Give it a try, I doubt you'd be disappointed.
