I too love their Vienna lager. This was my first DB Oktoberfest and it was very good. Not German made Oktoberfest good, but, I really liked it.

^^I spotted the DB Brewing Co.'s Naughty or Nice IPA in the store this afternoon. We've gone from Oktoberfest to Christmas-time quickly. Next trip, I'll pick up a pack.

Tonight for me: Hamm's.

I'm intrigued. I usually use bourbon for old fashioneds and rye for Manhattans.

Do you use a sugar cube or simple syrup in your old fashioned?

Interesting. I'm the exact opposite.

You should never use simple syrup in an old fashioned. Sugar cube always. (Opinions vary of course, but that's mine)

Yeah, I've seen that opined in my quest for the "perfect" old fashioned. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get a sugar cube to completely dissolve. I think the taste of a sugar cube drink is more pure than one with simple syrup, I always end up with a gritty residue.

I understand that. That is a consequence I run into too sometimes.

Now, if you're so inclined, try a Christmas Old Fashioned. A bartender at my wife's restaurant recommended this to me. I have yet to try it unfortunately.

-5 dashes Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters
-1/2 oz Maple Syrup
-3oz Angelo Envy Rye (Utah pour, so I recommend tripling that Wink)
-Amarena Cherry & Orange Swath

Making an effort to become a Bourbon aficionado. Not much experience other than Early Times, Jim Beam, Jack Daniels in mixed drinks. Have Southern Comfort and Fireball on hand and was recently given a bottle of Skrewball Peanutbutter Whiskey which was surprisingly good. I had seen it in stores and thought it sounded odd, but interestingly smooth, sweet, and salty.

So far I have tried Bulliet (liked it), Knob Creek (too harsh), and tonight was Woodford Reserve. I liked the WR as well. Have 50ml bottles of Buffalo Trace and Maker’s Mark to try as well.

Planning on buying 3-4 bottles to start, contenders at this point are:

Four Roses Small Batch
Angel’s Envy
Elijah Craig Small Batch
Eagle Rare

Those four I have not been able to find sampler bottles of but seem to be well regarded.

In the running from what I’ve been able to sample:

Bulliet
Woodford Reserve
Buffalo Trace (taste test pending)
Makers Mark (taste test pending)

Would love to hear thoughts on these as they are available and in the price range I am looking at ($30-$45 bottle locally)
