Southern Star's Bombshell Blonde, a nice blonde American Ale brewed in Conroe, Texas. Very drinkable.

I'm killing off the last of the Lagavulin 16 year scotch whisky.

I'm not a fan of the peaty / smokey / iodine taste. But after some months since I've opened the bottle, it has mellowed a bit.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

A friend I don't get to see as much as I'd like has become my "long-distance drinking buddy." We sample different things and text/email each other our impressions. Tonight it's E&J brandy, VSOP.

I'm new to brandy. This is good, but maybe something I wouldn't buy on the regular....

I had fajitas for dinner so I just mixed up a Paloma:
  • glass of ice
  • 1 part silver tequila (El jimador is what I currently have on hand and I like it)
  • 3 parts Fresca (can use Squirt but not as good)

I often spurge with a nice red wine with a good steak. Tonight's NY strip deserved some so I looked through my wine rack and among the Cabernet Savignon and Shiraz reds I found an odd one. A 1999 Chateau La Joya Merlot from Chile! Normally I have California, Washington state , and more recently Australian wines maturing so finding a South American was a surprise. No clue as to where and when I picked it up. A friend or wine shop recommendation? Maybe. But I must say it was a pleasant surprise having matured very well with a very smooth mellow taste on the tongue absent youthful red wine tanins. Going through the bottle was easy with the meal.

Hangar 24 "Betty" IPA. I like their Orange Wheat better. The Betty is very hops heavy, a stout IPA. I like a lighter style, like Widmer Hefewiezen or Belgian Blue white. But Hangar 24 is getting pretty popular around here (Socal).

And a splash of Pendleton 1910 Rye. This is a Canadian whiskey bottled in Pendleton, Oregon, and is way too sweet, so it is relegated to mixer status. Believe it or not, it has a very similar flavor profile to Kraken rum. Not sure how they pulled that off, but it is so similar....
