Years ago we could test candidates by giving them a test called three Wonderlic. It test a lot of things in a short period of time. That went away because it eliminated those unqualified. It was unfair to poor test takers, poor student of logic and math. So, we started hiring dummies with nice smiles who couldn’t perform.

The system has changed its tactics, now the kids can just be stupid. Cheating is no longer needed.

It was a complete waste of time and effort to fight them. All for nothing.

I could be retiring right now. Instead I did the stupid thing and turned them in and lost it all.

It's frustrating to see news like this.

Yeah, can we please keep a lid on the dramatics, with this "the monster won" stuff?

Really, guys, we have to get away from all these statements about the end of the world. Who wants to read that stuff?

We're going to get away from all the gloom and doom. Wallowing in it serves no purpose.

This is the absolute definition of racism. All those black and brown kids need a break to pass high school because they're all too stupid to achieve even the basic requirements of graduation. See this for exactly what it is.

Agreed. "I do not think it means what you think it means" seems to apply here.

For the next five years, an Oregon high school diploma will be no guarantee that the student who earned it can read, write or do math at a high school level

I think the writer screwed up, apparently now the diploma is GIVEN not earned.

In Washington the test started in 10th grade. Students could take each test 5 time.
One problem was students were being test on material that they won’t have for a year or more.
Another was that if two years of, say math credits were required, students might have forgotten the material.
One year the preparation was on “how to take the test” essay questions were explained as was 2 and 3 point answers. Not surprisingly, scores went up.
However, if 5 tries wasn’t enough. Students could then do a “Collection of Evidence” where earlier work was collected and evaluated.
The real issue comes out in the “ Bell shaped Curve.” A percentage of people tested won’t pass. What do you do then? This is when the helicopter moms fly in. How dare the school not pass their darling!
What was done was to have two diplomas one that said students met requirements another that they demonstrated mastery.

I’d be curious if the standardized high school math tests they use in Korea or Japan were applied here, what would the score distributions look like here vs there. Assuming somewhat controlled populations like just upper middle income areas and kids. Or whatever makes sense.

I’d like to compare their versions of the SAT vs ours.

If you open your eyes to what is going on in our country these days. Some of the dumbest teenager type children seem to be fat, lazy, lame or rich white children. But I know that is a sterotype about like yours bigdeal.

No matter how hard you try, you just can't fix stupid, and you damn sure can't hide it. Our country would be so much further ahead if our school systems would just go back to the three R's.

After having been an adjunct professor at three different colleges, I was disgusted at the number of college students who could not comprehend reading, or write an intelligible sentence. I never saw that in students who had come out of private schools. I saw it as an indictment of the public school system, geared to the lowest common denominator. My wife and I thank God every day that all of our grandchildren are bright.

Not really a 'new' thing, it just got 'codified'. Lots of 'HSGs" and even some 'CGs' are in this lot. Remember the "Wall Street Journal" is written for an eight grade reading level!

Nah man, you acted with integrity. That's a rare thing in this world, and it's unfortunate that having it cost you what it did. For what little it's worth, you earned the respect of this stranger on the internet.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Boyle said in an emailed statement that suspending the reading, writing and math proficiency requirements while the state develops new graduation standards will benefit “Oregon’s Black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color.”

Develop new standards? There are only two ways that can go - weaker standards or higher standards. Which will it be?
