So after taking advice from my trainer I started eating quite a bit more fat and cholesterol starting about a year ago. I had been led to believe by doctors and others that fat any any cholesterol was bad for me. Just got my labs back recently and my cholesterol numbers barely changed with my total number going up 2 points to 117 while triglycerides went down quite a bit. HDL went up a few points too - the "good cholesterol". I am 6'2" and stay around 200 pounds +/- a few. I workout three times a week. I stay away from junk and processed food most of the time but indulge on occasion and I do eat a lot of protein including whey shakes. Fats I eat are mostly milk products (I drink a lot of 2% milk, no more skim milk), eggs 2-3 daily, meat, olive oil, avocados, peanut butter, almonds, cashews, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and fish oil supplements. Anyhow just thought I would share results and continue to scoop on the sour cream on my baked potato and add butter to my oatmeal. ![]() | ||

You don't need to consider dietary cholesterol, just eat Protein and Fats, cut the bad carbs like sugar, bread, seed oils and you will be just fine. FWIW, your numbers looks very good but it takes a more extensive test to properly evaluate such as the NMR test. When I see the numbers the ones of importance to me are the Triglycerides and HDL > exceptional. ![]() Total and LDL are overrated or under evaluated almost all f the time with the simple test. Keep it up.
If you really want an improvement ~ drink Almond Milk or Heavy Cream. I usually do a half and half mixture. Skim and 20% are worse for you than Whole Milk but Cream is the best albeit hard to drink straight up. It's the carb content that is of concern not the cholesterol. Consuming cholesterol doesn't translate to elevated levels in our blood, so eat all the eggs you want. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride. | |||

Thanks with the replies gentlemen. I hope RFK jr gets the facts to the public and health care professionals including guidelines that quit demonizing fat and meat. I read a study (Penn State I think) that found that children in the study drinking whole milk were healthier and less overweight than those that drank skim milk. One of the possible reasons was that the extra fat in whole milk helped satiate the appetite. I learned about the many many benefits of eggs including it has a lot of choline. | |||

I am interested, too. How is all that saturated fat in heavy cream good for you? And I assume you meant 2% milk, not 20%. I think it’s probably the wisest course of action to ignore nearly all, if not all, the utrtiton guidance given to us over the last 50ish years by the government. It isn’t aging well and the sources should be in question. I think the simplest and best nutritional advice is simple this: eat food that is as close to its natural state as possible. Dairy whole milk is preferable to any nut/oat milk, for instance. While milk is preferable to low fat (low fat has something removed). Butter with 2 ingredients instead of “butter” with 5 ingredients. Just speaking in general terms. | |||

There has never been a scientifically proven causal link between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol. There has also never been a scientifically proven causal link between blood cholesterol and heart disease. It was all assumed, and any effort to change the assumption is resisted by the food companies and the drug companies. My cholesterol level tracks to my weight more than what I eat. | |||

Watch out with the eggs, choline is known to cause prostate issues. Not telling you to not eat eggs, just understand the correlation. | |||

Why are skim or 2% milk bad for you? Especially if you get enough fats of all kinds from other foods? Why is whole milk or heavy cream good for you? And what do you mean by the carb content? Of the milk, or carb content of overall diet? | |||

I think genetics plays a huge part. I cut out red meat and dropped 25% on mine in one month. So I’m not saying diet doesn’t matter, but it may not be the most important factor in some folks cases. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting! | |||

About 6-7 years back my total cholesterol was 112 but my HDL cholesterol was literally 2 points under recommended minimum. I got a note that my doctor ordered a prescription of generic Lipitor for me because of that. I messaged him back saying "why, my total cholesterol is 112? ". He messaged me back and said under further review he agreed. ![]() | |||

In my limited research, diets that are very high in carbohydrates and sugar tend to cause one’s cholesterol to go higher because the liver produces cholesterol to repair damage to the heart caused by triglycerides. It would certainly explain why my mother who eats a diet that is low in cholesterol still has high cholesterol because she can’t stop eating sweets. YMMV _______________ | |||

Thanks for that but lot's of healthy foods are high in choline including lean chicken, salmon, pork chops, beef, shrimp, milk, and even broccoli and there are substantial health risks not getting enough choline. About 4 eggs a day would get me to the daily recommended value which is of 550 mg not what many consider an optimum value.
