PHOENIX — An IRS agent was killed during an accidental shooting by another agent during a training exercise Thursday, according to ABC15 sources.

The (FBOP) Federal Bureau of Prisons says it is investigating a "shooting incident" at the Federal Correctional Institutional (FCI) Phoenix firing range Thursday afternoon but could not confirm additional details.

The FBOP says the gun range was being utilized by multiple federal agencies at the time.

The IRS has confirmed that an agent was taken to the hospital after the incident and did not survive.

ABC15 sources say the agent was shot by a fellow agent.

I think my first question is "why do IRS agents need to be armed?"

They're Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) special agents. They've been armed since the days of Al Capone and their only role is investigating serious tax crimes. Since 1918, 100 years plus. That's longer than anyone on this board has been alive. It's longer than the FBI has had statutory arrest authority or guns, longer than any but a very few other Federal LE agencies have existed.

Can we please NOT do this "but why does they needs gunz?????" shit every time they're in the news? Pretty please with tax-paid sugar on top?
