I did not like the 2021 Highlander we bought for my wife. So we traded in on a new 24' SR5 Premium T4R. Having had it for a while now. It does not get driven lots right know. Wife's rig. Taken on a trip or two. So here are some thoughts on it. The good: Fit and finish is excellent. True 4 wheel drive. Seats are good. Interior room is pretty good. Ride is better than decent. Like the height of the vehicle View from the vehicle is good. Ours is well apportioned. Leather, sunroof, heated and power seats, running bds. Like the old school 5spd. tranny. The tech is old school. Most of the drivers functions are pretty much toyota standard. Not a bunch of stuff I would not use for controls and features. Like the body on frame build. Gas mileage is not bad for the type of rig it is. The not so good: Brakes suck. Under powered. If I peg the throttle at 30mph is will hurry to 80mph. Decently impressive. My best explanation is that it always fells like you need to use more throttle than you should to get the response you are expecting. It is not horrible. Just not great. Suspension is ok. Handling/steering is decent. Feels a little bit short. A bit more wheel base would be good. For looks not really wild about the nose on it. Looks a bit weird. Also not wild about the tail light assemblies. The throw of the headlights are not great. It is truly a utility rig. Not a suv. Overall my biggest complaints are lack of power. The brakes and the handling could be better. But overall for what it is. It is a good rig. And will for sure last a long, long time. This message has been edited. its a culmination of 15 years of refinement of the 2009 4runner you can always go after market for brakes and power. ___________________________ The point is, who will stop me?

Power response is dictated by the ECU. You have 2 options for a fix. 1) Buy a Pedal Commander-this is an easy fix, plug and play. 2) Have someone flash your ECU. Go on to the 4 Runner forum. I have a Tacoma--same problem with throttle response. I had a Pedal Commander for a while. I upgraded my battery to an AGM--needed more voltage to charge the battery--had my ECU flashed to fix the throttle and battery charging voltage.

Or buy Banks version Pedalmonster for throttle improvement. I have a 2023 and 2019 4Runner and have never noticed any issue with braking. It is as good as any other new vehicle I have ever owned.

Get an OTT (Overland Tailor tune) ECU flash, does wonders. I have a ‘22 Limited and just put an Eibach 2.0 suspension upgrade on it. Totally eliminated the nosedive on hard braking. Ride is great. As you note it’s utilitarian vs luxury (even on the Limited), but for my purposes it’s great. Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view. Complacency sucks…

Brake and suspension upgrades are worth it. They aren't super-expensive either. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

Best money I spent on my 2023 PRO was for the OTT

Same experience with the OTT tune on a 2024 Tacoma. ___________________________ "Opinions vary" -Dalton

May I ask what that cost? Thank you. - - - - - I’m with ORC on the items on his “good” list. I think interior room is great, having come from a slightly smaller vehicle. I love the old-school technology — it’s part of why I chose T4R. On the “not so good” list: - Fuel mileage? Yep, it’s a pig. It’s a 4800-pound brick in the wind. I knew that going in, though, and offset it (sort of) by using my very efficient sedan for the daily commute. - Acceleration? Yeah, don’t go trying to win any stoplight races. - Brakes? I think they’re great, again comparing to my previous vehicle. - Suspension? I’ve been reading a lot about potential improvements. There’s nothing bad about it, but it could be improved. - The front end took a long while to get used to. It’s a good-ugly, though, rather than a bad-ugly. ![]() - The tail and front corner lights took some getting used to as well — they protrude like big ol’ plastic warts. - Headlights? Eesh. Frickin’ vertical cutoff really irks me. If this one will serve me as long and as well as my previous one (which is still in occasional-duty service), I’ll be a very happy man. God bless America.

Not much for modifications generally. Going to upgrade lights to Monster bulbs for sure. A brake modification is needed imho. Wife is fine with it as is. So I do not see doing anything for throttle response. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

I don’t know enough about replacing that LED headlight assembly, ORC, but if you want I’ll send you a writeup on the additional (and relatively hidden) lights I added. God bless America.

i am suspecting Toyota is not to keen on tuners like the OTT? "Practice like you want to play in the game"

I suspect value of these final model of this generation will hold strong. The 2025 is very underwhelming.

Thank you. That's not pocket change, but it's not terrible either.
Indeed. God bless America.

The tunes are supposed to be undetected by Toyota Dealers, I don't know that for sure but it's what I've been told, it not only helped with the throttle response but also the shifting. It was like night and day, I believe there are like three or four levels of tune for you to choose from.

Excellent vehicle with the exception of the seats for me. The seat angle and support were horrible for me, it just aggravated my bad hip something fierce. Even the seat jackers couldn't correct it. I have heard they changed the design of the seats in the 2025 models but you end up with an engine that doesn't have the history of reliability (it might be good or even okay, just have to wait and see) like the 5th Gen 4Runners.

I have a 2018. I like it okay except it’s a bit noisy inside and the obvious lack of throttle response. It’s also completely gutless at elevation, being noticeable even at 6k. Maybe that’s why the engines have a reputation for durability. The computer won’t allow it to be stressed. “That’s what.” - She

Have a 2019 SR5. Think the 24 was the last of the 6? New ones and the Land Cruiser have the turbo 4 cylinder. Looks good on paper, HP and towing increase but not convinced on longevity.
