My Persols (PO2989) are a good bit lighter than my Wayfarers. They just aren't "sport" sunglasses. No rubber surface at the nose or on the ear pieces, the earpieces don't curve back in to "grip" the face, etc. This message has been edited. Thanks, sounds like they’re great for driving. I’ve got a couple pairs of sport-type sunglasses around: the Maui Jims I spoke of in the first post and a couple pairs of Oakleys. I’ve also got a pair of Wiley X with clear and tinted lenses that I bought for IDPA, but there seems to be some small issue with the lenses, my eyes bother me after wearing them for an extended period of time. _______________________________________________________ despite them

Count me in the Maui Jim group. I have owned several pairs since the late 70s and I love them. I also appreciate they are still an American company. Whoever said you can't buy happiness forgot little puppies. Gene Hill

I used Oakley's years ago, lost a pair over the side. Crushed a pair while in the service-Oakley replaced them for me. I got a pair of RayBan's at cost; from my wife when she worked for the eye company. I really like 'em. I wore them while a cop and they suffered everything I did. I did manage to scratch the lenses, but a replacement poly-carbonate that is polarized was what replaced the original glass. Same tint, same color, lighter and w/o the little logo... I recently bought a pair of bifocals from Zenni Optical, with what they call their amber tint. The lenses are more or less aviator glasses shape. The tint is nice. It is a gradient, being much darker at the top and transitioning to almost no tint at the bottom (where the bifocal close up window is). They do a good job of cutting the sun's rays. About $85, depending on the frames you choose. These live in my truck and are my driving glasses of choice. I have Wiley-X with prescription insert for shooting, with amber lenses. Also in my Uvex goggles (for yard work mostly) have the amber lens. The amber tint works very well in our intense AZ sun.

I have a pair a member here sent me 10 years ago. They are my absolute favorite. Even over my Ray Bans. The lenses are perfect for driving/flying in bright sunlight. He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster.

Wait, what? |
Costa’s or Maui’s seem to have the finest lens and polarizing film quality I’ve used. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

I can't comment on the original lenses, because I had them replaced with prescription lenses, but for the last few years I have worn Persol 9649 sunglasses, a slightly lighter, thinner version of the classic Persol 649, one of the coolest pairs of sunglasses ever. Steve McQueen wore the folding version, the 714, in the original Thomas Crown Affair. I really like them. They look great, they fit great, they're made well, and at least on my face, they block sun and wind about as well as a pair of ski goggles. I have somewhat dry eyes. I wear them fishing and can drive my boat 50 mph, standing up with my face above the windshield, and keep my eyes wide open.

I have Costa Del Mar (Seven Mile) and had the worst customer service experience when my prescription lenses started to delaminate. First I was told that they couldn't replace the lenses because the frame was discontinued (less than 1 year old). I called BS and my shop got the regional rep involved. Was given the option of choosing what I considered a lessor frame built in China (original frame was made in Italy). Wasn't terribly happy about it, but accepted it. 6 weeks later I finally received the replacement sunglasses. Then, out of the blue, 3 Months later they sent my original frames with replaced lenses back to my eye glass shop and demanded I return the Chinese frame. I was glad to get the originals back, but was pretty sore about the whole process (both the time and the communication or lack thereof). The Costa's have pretty good clarity - but I think my previous Maui Jim's were better. All I know is my next pair won't be Costa Del Mar.

Made from a different mold |
CDM is no comparison to Maui Jim's. I have several of each in the house (and a set of Ray Ban's for my daughter) and Maui Jim is the clear winner in all categories, except maybe price, but I am willing to pay for quality. Wanna know something else pretty cool about Maui Jim? They don't charge extra for custom orders ___________________________ No thanks, I've already got a penguin.

Back when I wore contact lens, Zeiss of Germany sunglasses. Plastic lens. Probably too damn expensive today. ********* "Some people are alive today because it's against the law to kill them".

I think my wife took the decision from me and bought me a pair of Persols for my birthday, coming up in July. Glad you like them. _______________________________________________________ despite them

We gonna get some oojima in this house! |
I have prescription Wiley-x. I love them. They seem to be lighter than the other polycarbonate I have tried. ----------------------------------------------------------- TCB all the time...

I don't know about night and day. I have a pair of both and I'd say the Maui Jim's are marginally better. Certainly nowhere near $200 better. J Rak Chazak Amats

This. I have 3 pairs of Randolphs and they are all very high quality. The same glasses worn by our military pilots.

So I looked online at some of the brands mentioned in this thread, I ordered a pair online (so hard to order glasses & shoes online unless you're just replacing something you know works for you) I made the decision based on what style I know typically works for my head shape & am getting a pair of Vaurnet. Hope I like them
