This has been arguably THE best year of my life when it comes to my motorcycle hobby/addiction.

After over a decade of dreaming about BMW’s retro modern boxer twin otherwise known as the R nine T (a play on words and homage to the most excellent BMW R90). I came across a 2014 BMW R nine T with 1,500 original miles that has basically been a garage queen its whole life.

Turns out this bike has been residing only a few blocks from my house. Its owner is more of an ADV type rider and hardly rode the gorgeous machine.

I REALLY was not in the market for another bike having just acquired a high revving JDM unicorn (CB400S Super Four) and my first Harley/ Buell motorcycle. But this was an opportunity that was not going to come along again any time soon.

I am now the proud owner of my dream motorcycle!!!! This BMW R Nine T has super low miles and the cafe racer seat along with the Roland Sands Designs custom seat that is currently installed.

First impressions:
It is SMOOOOOOOOTH! The air/oil cooled Boxer twin has been refined to a point of near perfection by BMW! This bike cruises or rips depending on your mood. It has gobs of torque and a real time MPG gauge is a neat touch. I like the instant feedback it provides as you ride increasingly or decreasingly aggressive on the throttle.

It gets attention too! In the week I’ve been riding it at least five people have approached me to talk to me about my bike.

I was not planning on getting it but I am thrilled to be the owner of such a damn a cool bike. Cool

I like the look of the R9T, but the seat felt awful in the showroom. Dug into my thighs. I'd be more apt to look at the R12RS models, but they're quite pricey, new.

That should make a fun motorcycle, much more so than the R1150GS (I believe) you had.

Two of my friends ride the Urban GS version of that bike and really enjoy them.

They don’t really put off any heat that I can feel while I’m riding in shorts. They block the wind a little but as far as heat you don’t really feel any. My Buell X1 Lightning on the other hand gets a bit warm on my right leg because of the exhaust pipe routing and close proximity to my right leg. But then again you really only notice that when stopped at a light.

With a low tank that you can’t tuck behind you really feel a lot of wind blast with the R Nine T but it’s a naked bike so I suppose that is the point. Big Grin

I really like the new R90s tribute. My 890 adv puts out way more heat than either of my BMWs. That’s a nice bike and I really like the R9T simplicity.

One of the first things I noticed is the precision with the gearbox. The clunky gearbox of my 1150GS has been corrected with the R Nine T. Unlike my Buell, which can be difficult at times neutral is easy to find when you want to. The gear indicator being center on the dash and quite visible has totally spoiled me.

The speedo is a bit difficult to read at night with a gold mirror tint visor but this is literally the only issue I have found with the bike. It’s pretty darn close to being THE perfect motorcycle.

The boxer twin is a smooth, torquey motor that sounds excellent with the factory Akrapovič exhaust that makes glorious although somewhat subdued popping and burbling noises while engine braking.

Because most of my motos have race exhausts I am going to keep the factory exhaust on both the BMW and my Honda CB400S. I really don’t plan on modding either bikes exhaust any time soon if ever. I might change a few aesthetic things on the BMW but overall the bike is vastly exceeding my expectations.

I always hoped I would own one. I loved its looks but was not 100% sold on boxers because of my experience on my R1150GS. Well in 13 years BMW managed to make that motor achieve PERFECTION. Cool

That's the pinnacle of the air cooled boxers.
Here's mine, the older brother to yours. I bought it new in 2012.

Check the gas filler and get an Abdeck ring (rubber gasket) for under $10 and if your gas tank is like mine, it's worth it to eliminate rust.

I can’t comment on the factory seat. This bike has a RSD (Roland Sands Design) brat style seat that feels excellent. MUCH more comfy than the factory seat on my Buell, which isn’t that bad actually.

It came with the factory seat, passenger seat and the silver cafe racer style solo seat/hump thing behind the seat but I have not tried them out because the RSD seat feels and looks so good.
