I shared a couple of weeks ago that we had to put down our 17 year-old dog Cheyenne. It's been a rough couple of weeks. I keep thinking I hear barking in the back yard, keep reaching for leash when I go on evening walks, stuff like that. The kids have been particularly sad.
My wife started watching the animal shelter websites, but we couldn't find any puppies listed, and I really wanted a young one so we could train it up from ground zero. I had a detail to work in town today, so I stopped by when I was done and talked to them in person. Turns out somebody just dropped off four 7 week-old pups yesterday.
One thing led to another, and well...this guy is now home with us. Technically we're "fostering" because he isn't eligible for adoption until he's neutered, which can't happen until March. But barring some unforseen disaster, we're keeping him. He doesn't have a name yet because my oldest isn't home from work and we want to decide as a family, but my vote is for "Kevin" (UPDATE: The people have spoken! His name is Moose!) .
His dad was supposedly a pitt/shepherd mix, and mom was a husky. He was the most shepherd-looking of the litter, and the chillest. So far he's demonstrated a great temperament. He's inquisitive and curious, and very playful. He's not shy or timid at all. He had a blast exploring the back yard and the house...to the point that he got tuckered out and is now sleeping on the couch. Which probably means he'll be up all night. Good thing I have kids to deal with that!

Well, the ballot is in and his name is Moose. It was my oldest son's idea, and I like it. He's brown like one, kinda goofy, might get big, and it's another city/town in Wyoming, like Cheyenne.

Well, the plan was to start crate training him overnight. The crate is in my wife's art studio, but my oldest ended up sleeping on the pull-out couch in there with him last night. I didn't hear a peep out of him all night, not even when I got up at 4:30 for work, so he clearly slept well. I can't say for sure if he ever made it into the crate or not, though, lol.
