As the title says, I’ve accepted a position in Syracuse for 1 year. Laments and sarcasm have no place here. I’m asking for practical advice regarding living in the area, bringing in firearms, if the CCW process is worth a one year stint, how to handle magazine restrictions and the like. I’d also like to hear about the current state of the SAFE Act (I recall the 7 round restriction being successfully challenged). I won’t be moving until next July.

Thank you.
Daniel

Don't know any of the gun info. But I can recommend the Dinosaur Bar as a pretty great BBQ joint.

I went to college about 45 miles from there. Expect A LOT of snow. The lake effect is brutal. In my junior year Syracuse had over 190 inches.

If you don’t already have one, get a 4WD vehicle. Then, after you get there, find an empty parking lot and practice stopping, correcting skids etc. you need to understand how your vehicle performs. I see you are from SC, you will learning a new set of driving skills.

There is a great Greek restaurant in New Hartford (near Utica) named Symeons. It is worth the drive.

I’ve spent time in Vermont and New Hampshire. Originally from Arizona, there was a learning curve. I’m putting a little money into my FJ Cruiser to get it ready.

I grew up about half an hour south of Syracuse, Iowa winters are MILD in comparison. IIRC, the lake effect snow from Lake Ontario is worse west and north of the city. You'll save yourself a lot of work if you can get a garage with your lodging.

The summer months are nice (when it not raining), you're real close to the Finger Lakes and the Adirondack Mountains.

I’m in Albany, about 3hrs east of you.
Routinely travelled to Rochester for sons University.

Weather will be a learinging curve as well as the firearms laws.

Don’t bring any handguns, NYS does not recognize any other jurisdiction but it’s own and does not participate regarding reciprocity.

As for “assault weapons”, you need to review the safe act and steer clear of bringing in a prohibited configuration.

https://safeact.ny.gov/

NYS police, for the most part, enforce the letter of the law, expect zero tolerance.

Local police can be humorless, unless they know you will jam you up.

Enjoy, NYS, aside from its politics, it’s a wonderful state with many things to see/do.

You can posses a 10 round magazine but you can only put 7 in it unless you are at a sanctioned match.

You'll have part of Summer and Autumn to enjoy the beautiful lake country. South on 81 and west on 20 will take you to Skaneateles, NY which is a sweet heart of a town. The lake runs right down town and they got live music at the shore. Beautiful stores, great places to eat, some quite expensive and, nice bars. Syracuse Gun Show is 1,100 tables. Its 2 days. You are in Indian and wine country. Drive up the west shore of Cayuga Lake as there are a couple nice little gun shops. If you like to ski, Greek Peak is near buy. North of 90, the Thruway is where the snow gets deep.

What qualifies as sanctioned? I'm specifically interested in USPSA, Steel Challenge and NRA AP.

Even at a sanctioned match, you're limited to 10 plus 1, correct?

I grew up in Onondaga County and as others have pointed out, snow in the winter can be brutal. Snow tires are mandatory... forget the so called all weather crap. Back in the early '60s when I took Drivers Ed, we went out on a frozen lake to learn how cars behaved on ice and how to handle things.

As for guns and CCW, forget it. The hassle factor is obscene and for a 1 year stint absolutely not worth the effort which no doubt would be unsuccessful. If you domiciled in some of the counties further north you'd probably be luckier, but in Onondaga, forget it.

Summers are great whether you head north to Lake Ontario or south into the Finger Lakes region. Year round there are fun places west-south-west in Skaneateles or east in Fayetteville. There are a variety of attractions depending on your interests be it wine, or aged uber sharp cheddar (Colosse), or Dan Wesson factory in Norwich, or something else. There are numerous outstanding places to eat as well.

All this said, it is a liberal cesspool (which spawned and molded the likes of Joe Biden, Megyn Kelly, Terry McAuliffe, etc.) so be mindful and keep your more conservative views to yourself. Smile I certainly have never regretted having escaped from there although sadly many of my family still reside in the area.

Heck for a one year thing, I'd try to keep my perm address elsewhere and not bother to register the car or get a NY driver's license. Not sure if this is possible for the OP.

Is it just you or a family? If it’s just you I would look for a furnished apt, don’t establish residency and keep your guns safe out of state. I wouldn’t even bother bringing anything that can get you jammed up.

This is spot on.

I was stationed about an hour north of Syracuse at Ft Drum for about a dozen years. Snow/AT tires and 4-wheel drive will be some of your best friends up there initially. These, and windshield de-icer, snow brushes, jumper cables, etc. Just like Green Highlander mentioned, after the first decent snow fall each winter, I would go out into an empty parking lot and basically do a little refresher driving: starting, stopping, turning, skid recovery, etc.

As the others said, forget bringing pistols there. It took me, ( in Jefferson County Watertown/Ft Drum area, ) about four months to finally receive my NYS pistol license. I left from up there around the later half of 2008 and I know much has changed for the worse up there as far as pistol laws go.

Don't forget to snag up a snow shovel to clear a path to/from your house, ( unless a landlord, etc is taking care of that for you ) but also clearing snow from around your vehicle, too. I kept a square point shovel in my truck to help break up ice and dig out if I went off the road and got stuck. If you rent a place, make sure you know who is responsible for snow plowing/clearing the driveway, if applicable. Usually, the landlord does or contracts someone to do this.

Leave all but one of your guns back home, locked up.
Bring a gun that is legal there and get a magazine that meets local restrictions. A bad cop on a mission can claim you had a ten rounder with more than seven rounds. He said, she said, you lose.

The whole state, it is sad.
The political/economic/firearms climate is driving decisions for folks to leave NYS.

Functionally, NYS is a one political party state.
Buffalo, and NYC drive politics with via population density.

Without delving into the nuances of the safe act, a bolt action rifle, pump shotgun are good to go.

As noted earlier, no magazines with a capacity over 10rnds is permitted, not even grandfathered, no pre-bans etc.

The 7rnd limit was deemed unenforceable by the Western NY courts, though the law was not amended by the decision.

IIRC, you can load 10 while at a range or, sanctioned event. F'ng nonsense to me.

You won't be shooting any handgun events here in NYS, so whatever you are interested in would pertain to rifle/shotgun.

No, you can't use someone else's handgun in NYS, that too is forbidden... (permitted under certain circumstances) like Olympic training/competition.
As you have to be 21yrs of age to be permitted.

No handguns unless you have a valid NY pistol permit. Permiting will take more than a year in some locales.

Sucks here in this regards.

Looks like I'm taking up biathlon again. Just to be better informed, can someone point me to the process by which you bring in a pistol?

I'll be leaving most of my firearms out of state. I don't think maintaining a residence out of state is possible in this case. The next move after NY will be to a place yet to be determined.
