Food and Drug Administration just issued a warning advising everyone to avoid “Big Penis.” Login/Join

Well if this isn't the funniest FDA warning I've ever seen. Not sure it will be effective warning, if they warn that it works too well.

Penis’ supplement works a little too well

The FDA is one of the more vital government agencies when it comes to keeping consumers safe from deceptive marketing and dangerous products, but sometimes a product comes along that we can assume is trash even before the FDA weighs in. In any case, the Food and Drug Administration just issued a warning advising everyone to avoid a male enhancement supplement called — sigh — “Big Penis.”

It seems that Big Penis does indeed do its job, and it does it quite well. However, the FDA warns that it achieves this thanks to the unlabeled inclusion of sildenafil, better known by the brand name Viagra.

Including a prescription drug in a non-prescription supplement is obviously illegal, but beyond just being scummy it can also present some very serious health concerns. This is especially true when it comes to sildenafil, which can adversely affect individuals with preexisting health issues.

FDA laboratory analysis confirmed that Big Penis contains sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, an FDA-approved prescription drug for erectile dysfunction. This undeclared ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, such as nitroglycerin, and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates.

The FDA says it discovered this unlabeled inclusion during “an examination of international mail shipments,” meaning that this wasn’t a case of a company discovering the issue on its own and launching a voluntary recall. Instead, it’s more like the company was caught red-handed selling Viagra under a different name and without a prescription.

Now, I’m not going to pass judgment on anyone for seeking out a male enhancement supplement… but if you’re buying a bottle of pills with “Big Penis” written in red and black on the side, you should probably know what you’re getting yourself into, and it’s not going to be good.

The story is definitely legit as I found the story on FDA's website.

The author's "name" in the OP's link reminds me of a story from my college days. The local newspaper, Lafayette Journal & Courier, went to the pool hall at the Student Union to do a story on Purdue students blowing off steam during exam week. They decided to take a picture of a couple guys from my house, and then printed their "names" without checking ID. Mike Oxbig was photographed shooting pool with 2 other guys in the background Big Grin

Read through the other listed offenders. I can safely say if I see any of those on the counter of the local Kwik-E-Mart, I would not say, fuck it, give me one of those Red Stallion Extra Strongs and couple the Nectar Del Amors.

All joking aside, the FDA has advisories about:
  • tainted sexual enhancement products (15 pages worth Eek) .
  • "All-natural" body building products containing actual steroids.
  • "All-natural" arthritis/pain remedies containing corticosteroids
  • "All-natural" weight loss products containing prescription drugs that can cause blood pressure problems

Many times it looks like a product that was caught was right back on the market after being rebranded.

This hits close to home for me as I was in the hospital 3 days this week due to acute liver trauma from a legitimate prescription. I was taken off all medications (prescriptions and OTC) as well as supplements. Once I was out of the woods, I was chatting with my gastroenterologist and he shared that he has had patients have to have liver transplants after purchasing "all-natural" supplements such as liver cleanses. It reminded me of a saying that Shugart shared about supplements "if it's strong enough to cause an action it's strong enough to cause a reaction"
