I have a problem. I can't stop! Some people go to a gym. I cut, haul, split and stack logs. I guess there are worse things than that.

I think I wood would do the same, but chainsaws terrify me. I like to split wood. Sledge and wedge style. And I love to burn firewood in my fancy barrel.

Same here. Big Grin

Funny thing is that while I love doing it now, I hated it then with a passion. Dad would not leave the woods until it was not possible to stack another piece of wood on the truck without it falling off. Then, of course, once we got home I'd have to unload it and restack it. Good times. Roll Eyes

Thanks for reminding me, I need to get to work cut and splitting.

Chris has a YouTube channel called in the wood yard.

I think you might enjoy.
After watching him for three months,
I'd be cutting like crazy if I had the funds to start up

I do indeed have one (wood burning insert). We go through 10-12 face cords a season on average. I harvest way more than I need and every year give away about 6 face cords to friends and neighbors. I never accept money but grudgingly accept beer, bourbon, home grown produce and eggs. One neighbor is retired and loves to garden - he gives me fresh veggies all season long; he will never have to buy firewood as long as I am around. Smile

This time I dropped the trees, Fairly easy job as they were in the middle of the yard away from any building, power lines, etc. (I let the folks with insurance drop them in those cases).

They don't call them dead trees "widow-makers" for no reason!

(Of course, all you woodcutters know that the tree huggers of the world are gonna put a hex on you.)

For some reason, I've had a spate of youtube videos come up on tree felling. At least, now, I know the theory.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Chainsaw? Give me a solid double bit ax that’s at least 50 years old. Chainsaws are only for when I don’t have room to swing one.

Back in summer 2006 we went to wife"s childhood home in northern Wisconsin and was invited by my father-in-law to accompany him on a firewood gathering excursion.. Upon returning with a pickup truck and a small trailer load of firewood and pulling up to his woodpile which was a huge size to me but FIL said that he still would need much more.. The previous winter he had burned 22 cords worth as primary heat source with gas/oil fired heat as a floater source if and when needed....... While stationed in Alaska in 1974 thru 1979 came in contact with many civilians who used firewood as primary heat source if not their only source of heat during the winter season as well as year round. To including cooking......................................................................................drill sgt.

You felled the tree, which is good. However the cut could have been better. The notch and the backcut were not level. You cut through was is called the hinge on the side closest to the camera. The means the wood on the far side of the tree was holding all the weight of the tree until it fell. The tree could have easily fell to one side or another, rather than in the direction of the notch.

Here's a video that demonstrates a few felling techniques. These guys cut some pretty good notches, and the know how to make a good hinge.

Humbolt cut -- Very effective cut, especially in mountainous terrain. Harder for casual cutters.

Gapped face -- Effective, but I don't do it.

Conventional -- What most of us do. It gets the tree on the ground.

Bore cut -- An advanced technique, used in combination with Humbolt or Conventional. Works really well for trees with a rotten core, to avoid a barber chair break.

Sizwill -- pretty advanced. Most people will just use a rope & pulley to control the fall.

Pulling over with a rope -- I do this regularly. Have a come along, rope, & chain with me most of the time I'm cutting.

Open Face notch -- Most of us won't have the machine. Not his best cut, but close enough to work.

Back cut first -- Won't catch me doing this.

As these state, start with a good notch. Take your time. Notice how their hinges break. Use plastic wedges.
