Heller and later McDonald said that regulations on the sale, possession, or use of guns are permissible if they are within the class of traditional, “longstanding” gun regulations in the United States. Registration of all lawfully possessed guns – as distinct from licensing of gun owners or mandatory recordkeeping by gun sellers – has not traditionally been required in the United States and even today remains highly unusual. Under Heller’s history- and tradition-based test, D.C.’s registration requirement is therefore unconstitutional.

Why would they commit themselves this early in what I'm sure they hope will be a long and fruitful negotiation session? This isn't reading the tea leaves, this is entirely to be expected at this juncture.
Now that the nominee has been named, both McConnell the Pushing Turtle and "Chuckles" Schumer will count noses. As far as the those two are concerned, they're just defining the political battlefield they'll both have to get across between now and the vote on the nominee. For the Four Barneys, though, it's like an IPO - the prices of their votes will rise and fall until the nominee gets voted on, but this is where the initial prices for their votes are set.

FYI: Scalia and Ginsburg were great friends. Not just 'work friends', but actual very close friends. Just because someone is associated with a person with opposing or different ideological views does not mean they share those views.
By all accounts, Kavanaugh's judicial philosophy closely aligns with Justice Thomas. Time will tell, but I wouldn't be so quick to label him before he hears a single case. Scroll up and see his ruling on the Heller case.
